  • Installed Generac 24kw 2 years ago...
  • outage this weekend was 1st time needed in a lights out
  • ran fine for 5+ minutes till both Trane AC units kicked on
  • tripped off Gen with a 1902 undervoltage Code
  • Generator restarted & ran fine for 5+ till AC's kicked on & tripped again
  • repeated sequence once more till the 3rd time locked it out.
  • reset Generator & entire sequence repeated
  • disabled AC units, reset Generator & it ran fine
  • enabled smaller AC & the Gen stayed in
  • enabled larger unit & Gen tripped
  • swapped sequence & turned large unit on 1st & it tripped
  • had a Generator Tech out today to troubleshoot
  • propane flow was good under load
  • Tech repeated what we did & got same results
  • checked the 2-Trane AC unit nameplates & got the bad news
    • large AC has a startup current of 125A with a running current of 16A
    • small AC is 85A/13A

  • Tech suggested a soft start setup for the AC's
  • HVAC said they'd install it if we buy it, but, might void the Trane warranty...is that correct ?
  • Tech said there was no way that he knew of to extend the under voltage circuit timer to ride out the inrush for a few cycles...is that correct ?
  • anyone have experience with soft start systems ?
  • for "buy a bigger generator" dude...no, I'm not buying a 36kw just to ride through a 1/2 secondish inrush current
