Anyone else remember when NBC decided to broadcast a meaningless end-of-season game between the Jets and the Dolphins in 1980 without any play-by-play or color announcers? As much as many of us like to complain about the quality of announcing, this experiment was just too strange and was never repeated.
I thought I would like it, but realized after a quarter or so that even bad announcing might be better than none at all. Legendary sportscaster Dick Endberg said they were all scared to death it would catch on, but after watching they realized they had nothing to worry about.
Maybe we're about to find out about games with no crowd noise.
