I asked this question deep in another thread but no response so am putting this into its own… as I see there are some knowing AC people on the board.

My air conditioner repairman says my traditional outdoor compressor for my downstairs AC is dying (gas furnace and other equipment is in attic). Should I replace it with a new heat pump? Has any homeowner done it and willing to share the experience? Seems like it would save money over the long term due to efficiency and also be more environmentally friendly.

Note: I do have an upstairs unit too. Can I do one at a time or should I replace both?
