5/16/1910- French Gypsy Jazz guitarist extraordinaire Django Reinhardt is born in Belgium.

5/14/1925- Legendary and influential Blues artist B.B. King is born in rural Mississippi. He’s known as 1/3 of the renowned “Three Kings of the Blues” (the others being Freddie and Albert King). He is rated as the 3rd in Rolling Stones “gretest Guitar List” behind Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix.


5/13/1941- Ricardo Valenzuela (Ritchie Valens) is born in L.A., he would become an early Rock pioneer before dying at 17 years old in a plane crash.

5/13/1943- Motown Singer Mary Wells is born in Detroit. She became Motown’s first female star after her single written by Smokey Robinson “My Guy” hits no. 1., Motown Records 1st no. 1.

5/14/1943- Jack Bruce, bassist and lead- singer the seminal rock band Cream is born in Scotland.


5/19/1945- 10 days after VE Day, Pete Townsend of The Who is born in London.


5/15/1948- Brian Eno of Roxy Music and ambient music pioneer is born in England.

5/19/1949- Dusty Hill, who was the bassist/Keyboardist and co-vocalist for ZZ Top is born in Dallas.


5/19/1951- Jeffrey Hyman is born in NYC. In ’73 he changed his name to Joey Ramone after founding The Ramones.

5/18/1952- Just 30 minutes south of San Antonio on IH-35 in Poteet, George Strait is born. He would rule Country Music from the mid 80’s into the 90’s and 100 million records worldwide and have 53 country no. 1 singles,


5/13/1950- Stevland Morris is born in Saginaw-. Though born prematurely and with complications that leave him blind, he would become a child musical prodigy. He became known as Stevie Wonder and was signed to Motown Records at the age of 11. He wis still the only artist to receive the Grammy for Album of the Year awards with 3 consecutive albums. He has sold 100 million albums and has won 25 Grammys.


5/14/1952- David Byrne of the legendary New Wave band Talking Heads is born in Scotland.


5/14/1959- New Orleans Jazz pioneer Sidney Bechet dies in France.

5/17/1964- Celtic singer Enya is born in Ireland.

Bob Dylan is famously accosted by a fan at a NH concert, calling Dylan “Judas” after he went from an acoustic sound to electric.

5/14/1962- Ian Astbury, vocalist for The Cult, is born in England.


5/17/1965- Industrial/alternative rock/electronic whiz Trent Reznor is born in Pennsylvania. He would form his own band Nine Inch Nails on which he is the singer, drummer, bassist, guitarist, bassist and keyboardist.


5/13/1966- Darius “Hootie” Rucker is born in Charleston.

5/16/1966- The Beach Boys release the revolutionary, transformative and highly influential album “Pet Sounds.”




Janet Jackson is born in Indiana.

5/13/1967- The Supremes score the 10th U.S. no. 1 single with “The Happening.”

Scott McKenzie released a song written by John Phillips (Mamas & The Papas) that would become the defining Summer of Love and couter-culture anthem. It would reach no. 1 in the UK and 8 other countries.


5/16/1967- Glen Campbell records one his signature songs, “Gentle on my mind.”


5/14/1969- Neil Young releases the first single off his 2nd album “Everybody knows this is nowhere.”


5/19/1969- The Who release their 4th album, a rock opera that centers around deaf, blind and impaired boy, it’s called “Tommy.”

5/16/1970- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 2nd album Déjà vu hits no.1 on the album charts.


5/13/1971- Upon turning 21, Stevie Wonder learns that despite earning over 30 million in income since childhood his net earnings only amounted to 1 million.

5/17/1973- Josh Homme, guitarist/vocalist and leader of Queens of the Stone Age is born in Palm Springs.


5/19/1973- Stevie Wonder gets his 3rd no. 1 single with “You are the sunshine of my life.”


5/16/1975- Elton John’s 9th album in 6 years “Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy” debuts at no. 1 on the U.S. charts (and stay for 7 weeks) and also becomes the 1st album to be certified Gold (500,00 copies) before its release.


5/19/1975- Lynyrd Skynyrd release their only single off their 3rd album that tells the story of betrayal and drunkenness made deadly with cheap and freely available black-market handguns.


Aerosmith releases the lead single off their smash 3rd album “Toys in the Attic.”


5/15/1976- The Rolling Stones album “Black and Blue” (their 1st with guitarist Ronnie Wood) hit no.1 on the U.S. charts.


5/13/1978- Yvonne Elliman’s “If I can’t have you” goes to no.1 on the U.S, singles charts.


5/19/1978- After being recorded on a $180.00 budget, Dire Straits release their 1st major label single, “Sultans of Swing.”


5/14/1979- Dainiel Auerbach, singer/guitarist of the Black Keys is born outside of Canton, Ohio.


5/17/1980- The day before his band was to begin their 1st North American tour, Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis commits suicide. He is still revered as a post-punk/alt rock figure and songwriter. The remaining members became New Orde, adopted a more synth/keyboard/ dance sound and become global dance icons.
