Go away Florida Gators!

Florida is trying to shoot the moon this weekend in bringing in a ton of recruits for the Gators' home game against LSU. Included on the visit list are a lot of players who are committed elsewhere, including a few Texas commitments and a top UT target.

Texas commitment Jaime Ffrench visited UT last weekend and told us he might take in a game at either Florida or Miami. Not only is he taking in a game, he'll be in Gainesville on an official visit.

Myron Charles has maintained ever since he flipped from FSU to Texas that he wasn't completely closing the door, and he'll be at the game on Saturday as an unofficial visitor. He took a Florida official visit in the spring.

One-time Florida commitment and current UT DL target Joseph Mbatchou will be in Gainesville for an official visit. We'll see if the Gators can creep back into this one.

Conner Williams retires mid-season

Reported by Ian Rappaport and others,

RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks center Connor Williams has unexpectedly decided to retire at 27 years old, walking away from the team with eight games left this season.
Coach Mike Macdonald said Friday that the seven-year veteran made the decision earlier this week for "personal reasons." The only other detail he provided on Williams' reasoning was that it was not because of any issues with his surgically repaired knee. Macdonald is under the impression the decision is final, saying he doesn't think there's a chance Williams changes his mind.
"I don't believe so," Macdonald said. "We're honoring his wishes, and we'll keep all those reasons and conversations private for obvious reasons and wish him the best."

Did y'all ever stop to think that

Arch isn't quite ready? And that's why Quinn is still playing? Go back to the UGa game. Sark yanked Quinn, but Arch went 3/6 for 19 yards and a fumble. He also had a bad sack where he took a 10 yard loss instead of throwing the ball away.

I think lost in the name of the backup quarterback is that he's still not quite ready. If he was, I think Sark would have already pulled the trigger.

Random thought after Texas handles Arkansas in Fayetteville

Survive and advance, I guess. We’re at a point in the season, as Sark has mentioned a few times, where every week is essentially a championship game and you just have to power through each week and keep stacking wins. This was no beauty pageant, but the Longhorns did just enough to get a fairly ugly road win in a rivalry game. The game was sometimes frustrating to watch, but getting the win is all that really matters in the end and Texas’ championship hopes remain alive. Make no mistake though, this team is going to need to play much better moving forward, especially on offense, if the title talk is going to continue.

Going into this game, Texas looked like the much better team on paper, but I had a feeling this one would play out much closer than the match-ups would seemed to have indicated. It certainly did, thanks in large part to a pretty dreadful performance by the Texas offense. The defense played well for most of the game but did seem to wear down a bit in the second half, which is understandable when you factor in how much that unit was on the field and the momentum Arkansas was able to generate in the second half. Sark always talks about complementary football and the offense did very little to help the defense in this game.

Interesting decision by Sark to go on offense to start the game after winning the toss. You don’t see that very often. It didn’t work out with Texas having to punt, but I didn’t hate the call and the aggressive mindset on the road.

Jahdae Barron is so good. Looking back, what a huge flip from Baylor that was for Texas back in 2020. Incredible career for Barron, who just might be Texas’ best defensive player. One series after getting an interception, Barron makes a beautiful read on a third-down screen to get Arkansas off the field. Running a WR screen to his side of the field never seems to work.

That fake screen to Wingo seems to work every single time. Texas used it again in the first quarter and Arkansas bit big-time, leaving Matthew Golden open for a wide-open touchdown reception for the first score of the game.

Hudson Card plays defense for Arkansas now? Who knew?

Alfred Collins has really made himself some money in recent weeks.

At first, I was thinking Texas needs Michael Kern to be better. His first two punts in this game were terrible. Then I saw Arkansas’ punter and it got me thinking Texas should be thankful for Kern.

How in the hell was that not interference on Matthew Golden in the end zone on that second-quarter ball that was underthrown? That non-call cost Texas four points after the Longhorns had to settle for a field goal.

Silas Bolden has never seen a punt that he’s not going to try to field.

Quinn Ewers downfield throwing … not great.

What a terrible series by Texas towards the end the first half. Driving and looking to go up possibly by three scores and consecutive negative plays in the passing game killed the drive and forced a punt. Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen two consecutive negative-yardage completions lose a combined 12 yards. The next series to end the half wasn’t much better with Ewers taking a sack to end the drive.

I swear, on half of Quinn Ewers’ sacks this year it looks like he actually stepped into the tackle. Saw more of that today on a couple of occasions in the first half.

First half stats of notes … Quinn Ewers, 15-23 for 100 yards and 1 touchdown; Texas 58 rushing yards on 19 carries; Texas 158 total yards, Arkansas 74 total yards; Arkansas 16 yards rushing; Texas 2-9 on third downs; Texas 7 points off of turnovers; Texas 4 sacks, Arkansas 2 sacks; Jahdae Barron 4 tackles, 3 solo, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT; Anthony Hill 0 tackles;

What’s better than eating some bad beat bacon at TCH Social while watching the Longhorns beat the piggies from Arkansas?

Colin Simmons had a quiet stretch mid-season but he’s really starting to come on again and flashed his pass-rushing talent in this one.

I’ll wait to make a final judgment after the game, but through three quarters, Quinn Ewers simply has not been good enough. Not even close. If Texas wants to win a championship this year – conference or national – Ewers has to be able to eliminate these types of games. A 111 passer rating and 130 yards through the third quarter is not getting it done.

Arkansas saw Kobe Black enter the game and went right after him on two consecutive plays for good yardage. It wasn’t necessarily terrible coverage by Black, but the Razorbacks capitalized when he was in the game with a couple of nice passes.

There have been some national pundits lately who have questioned what Texas has done to deserve its lofty ranking, and this game is going to give the doubters more ammunition to use against the Longhorns.

Texas in the third quarter … 39 yards of offense, 3 points scored, 3:31 time of possession, 1 first down, 1-4 passing. Arkansas third quarter … 98 yards of offense, 7 points scored, 11:25 time of possession, 8 first downs, 6-8 passing.

Jaydon Blue, heart attack avoided on that fumble in the fourth quarter. You could see that play coming from a mile away but Blue was fortunate that the ball bounced out of bounds.

Great response and a great drive by Texas after Arkansas had cut the lead to three points in the fourth quarter. For all the struggles Ewers had leading up to that drive, he was great in that sequence including an absolute perfectly placed ball to Matthew Golden for the touchdown. That was also one hell of a catch by Golden. That drive might have been a season-saver.

On the next drive, just when it looked like Arkansas was going to cut the deficit to one score, Alfred Collins again comes up huge with a forced fumble from behind that Michael Taaffe recovered. Huge swing on that play.

Like I said at the top, it wasn't exactly the most beautiful win against a pretty mediocre Arkansas team, but knocking off the Razorbacks on their one home field always makes for a good day, no matter how things unfold.

Ketch’s article this morning regarding glass half full or half empty got me to thinking… what can we realistically expect from this team? We should have enough data by now to know how far these guys will most likely go.

I’m having a great time this season watching us win, even if it isn’t pretty. I’m hoping we can pull out wins over the next two weeks and especially in college station, but that game is looking like a real toss up right now. Even if we do win in college station, can we expect to beat Georgia in the SEC championship game? I wouldn’t think so. Not that we can’t, but that we most likely won’t. So where does that leave us?

Do we really think this team is the best team in all of college football? I don’t think so but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun as hell watching them try.

Dear Dads: Football On TV Isn't An Excuse Not To Parent

“I just think it is so crazy that we have normalized that it is totally fine for a parent, specifically it seems to be the husband, not being there because there is a game on.”
by JAMIE KENNEY
November 5, 2024
Before becoming a parent, my weekends were gloriously free. I could sleep as late as I wanted, marathon watch Law and Order: SVU, day-drink with friends, curl up with a book. It didn’t matter because no one relied on me. Now, as a mom of two, ball games, play rehearsals, and my kids’ increasingly rigorous social liveshave put a damper on everything I want to do. And that’s fine: I signed up for the whole “Mom” gig, but TikTok user Samantha (@thenyblonde), seems to have found a loophole. The catch? It doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

Samantha, a mom of two living in New York City, usually posts about fashion, but in a recent post, which she knows might be controversial, she addresses something that has been gnawing at her.
“The past few weeks, I have noticed a lot of husbands/partners have been absent from kids’ birthday parties, playdates, any type of weekend activity,” she observes. “I’m always asking, ‘Where is so and so’ and the answer consistently is ‘Oh, there’s a game on.’ ... I just think it is so crazy that we have normalized that it is totally fine for a parent, specifically it seems to be the husband not being there, because there is a game on.”
And as she thought about a corollary for women — a specifically timed televised event that routinely kept them away from weekend responsibilities — not one came to mind.
“I wish I could,” she continues. “I wish I did have something as an excuse to say ‘I’m going to tap out of Saturday because something is happening on TV that I cannot miss at a very specific given time which happens usually to be in the very smack dab middle of the day during all of the children’s events or all the responsibilities that take place.’”
And indeed, according to data from Statista, last year 68% of American men watched at least two hours of football a week, with 21% watching six hours or more. Considering a lot of these games happen, as she pointed out, smack dab in the middle of a Saturday or Sunday, that’s a lot of missed parenting... and that’s only one sport of many.

Despite her fear of this being a controversial statement, commenters were quick to agree and commiserate.
“Imagine a woman telling her husband ‘Housewives is on so I can’t. please take our kid,’” mused one.
“People act like sports aren't a TV show you can just watch later,” another scoffed.
“Being a nanny in NYC has taught me how few men are truly equal partners in parenting,” lamented a third.
But it wasn’t all bad news: the comments section was also full of folks who found a man who either didn’t care about football or who realized that parenting demanded he watch it later in the day.
One commenter highlighted the benefits of forgoing football season.
“My husband doesn’t give a shit about football,” they wrote. “He tells people he loves football season because Costco is empty on Saturday here in Alabama.”
Honestly, even if being a present and equal partner in a family weren’t motivating enough, an empty Costco feels like a strong argument for just watching the game later...

Five of the last seven teams in the AP top 25 lost this week

19 Washington St.
20 Kansas St.
21 LSU
22 Louisville
24 Missouri

You can also add
6 UTenn
7 BYU

Vandy should be moving back into the top 25 and due to the lack of bottom teams who won this week, 7-3 Colorado St, who will be playing Boise St in the MWC championship has an outside shot at moving into the top 25.

The way things are going, 5-5 Florida may be moving into the top 25 soon. 🤣😂🤣😂

Most Underrated Players

There is plenty of love given to Banks, Barron, Collins, Mukuba, Ewers, Bond, Golden, Hill Jr., Taaffe, Majors, and Muhammad, and for good reason. (comma or no comma?) But four players are not given the praise they have earned:

1. Barryn Sorrell: 27 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 6.5 TFLs, and 11 QBH (does that mean QB hits or QB hurries? @Anwar Richardson). He just plays his ass off game after game and snap after snap. I would argue his consistency is his number one asset. He reminds me of Tim Crowder. Or Greg Ellis with the Cowboys.

2. Hayden Conner: I have learned from the weekly review of the OL by @Alex Dunlap and it seems Conner has played well. His grades from game 9 to game 1: 81-78-77-81-80-80-79-78-78. He’s third behind Banks and Williams. Also, he always seems to be second after DJ Campbell and ready to throw down when some DL takes a cheap shot at Quinn or Arch.

3. Jaylon Guilbeau: 43 tackles, 2TFLs, and 2 PBUs. Another player that seems to be a model consistency: plays his role, does his job, and shows up every game. He just hasn’t made any wow plays. He doesn’t have an interception, forced fumble, or fumble recovery. Who gets to stab Texcalibur: the player that caused the fumble or recovered it?

4. Silas Bolden: 17 catches, 174 yards, and 1 TD. But his true impact has been as the punt returner. He makes some very questionable reward v. risk decisions, but he has been great back there. He will house 2 before the season is over. He’s so very close.

Who are the others? TIA.
