OB Dads - Just so you know…

Dear Dads: Football On TV Isn't An Excuse Not To Parent

“I just think it is so crazy that we have normalized that it is totally fine for a parent, specifically it seems to be the husband, not being there because there is a game on.”
by JAMIE KENNEY
November 5, 2024
Before becoming a parent, my weekends were gloriously free. I could sleep as late as I wanted, marathon watch Law and Order: SVU, day-drink with friends, curl up with a book. It didn’t matter because no one relied on me. Now, as a mom of two, ball games, play rehearsals, and my kids’ increasingly rigorous social liveshave put a damper on everything I want to do. And that’s fine: I signed up for the whole “Mom” gig, but TikTok user Samantha (@thenyblonde), seems to have found a loophole. The catch? It doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

Samantha, a mom of two living in New York City, usually posts about fashion, but in a recent post, which she knows might be controversial, she addresses something that has been gnawing at her.
“The past few weeks, I have noticed a lot of husbands/partners have been absent from kids’ birthday parties, playdates, any type of weekend activity,” she observes. “I’m always asking, ‘Where is so and so’ and the answer consistently is ‘Oh, there’s a game on.’ ... I just think it is so crazy that we have normalized that it is totally fine for a parent, specifically it seems to be the husband not being there, because there is a game on.”
And as she thought about a corollary for women — a specifically timed televised event that routinely kept them away from weekend responsibilities — not one came to mind.
“I wish I could,” she continues. “I wish I did have something as an excuse to say ‘I’m going to tap out of Saturday because something is happening on TV that I cannot miss at a very specific given time which happens usually to be in the very smack dab middle of the day during all of the children’s events or all the responsibilities that take place.’”
And indeed, according to data from Statista, last year 68% of American men watched at least two hours of football a week, with 21% watching six hours or more. Considering a lot of these games happen, as she pointed out, smack dab in the middle of a Saturday or Sunday, that’s a lot of missed parenting... and that’s only one sport of many.

Despite her fear of this being a controversial statement, commenters were quick to agree and commiserate.
“Imagine a woman telling her husband ‘Housewives is on so I can’t. please take our kid,’” mused one.
“People act like sports aren't a TV show you can just watch later,” another scoffed.
“Being a nanny in NYC has taught me how few men are truly equal partners in parenting,” lamented a third.
But it wasn’t all bad news: the comments section was also full of folks who found a man who either didn’t care about football or who realized that parenting demanded he watch it later in the day.
One commenter highlighted the benefits of forgoing football season.
“My husband doesn’t give a shit about football,” they wrote. “He tells people he loves football season because Costco is empty on Saturday here in Alabama.”
Honestly, even if being a present and equal partner in a family weren’t motivating enough, an empty Costco feels like a strong argument for just watching the game later...

Five of the last seven teams in the AP top 25 lost this week

19 Washington St.
20 Kansas St.
21 LSU
22 Louisville
24 Missouri

You can also add
6 UTenn
7 BYU

Vandy should be moving back into the top 25 and due to the lack of bottom teams who won this week, 7-3 Colorado St, who will be playing Boise St in the MWC championship has an outside shot at moving into the top 25.

The way things are going, 5-5 Florida may be moving into the top 25 soon. 🤣😂🤣😂

Most Underrated Players

There is plenty of love given to Banks, Barron, Collins, Mukuba, Ewers, Bond, Golden, Hill Jr., Taaffe, Majors, and Muhammad, and for good reason. (comma or no comma?) But four players are not given the praise they have earned:

1. Barryn Sorrell: 27 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 6.5 TFLs, and 11 QBH (does that mean QB hits or QB hurries? @Anwar Richardson). He just plays his ass off game after game and snap after snap. I would argue his consistency is his number one asset. He reminds me of Tim Crowder. Or Greg Ellis with the Cowboys.

2. Hayden Conner: I have learned from the weekly review of the OL by @Alex Dunlap and it seems Conner has played well. His grades from game 9 to game 1: 81-78-77-81-80-80-79-78-78. He’s third behind Banks and Williams. Also, he always seems to be second after DJ Campbell and ready to throw down when some DL takes a cheap shot at Quinn or Arch.

3. Jaylon Guilbeau: 43 tackles, 2TFLs, and 2 PBUs. Another player that seems to be a model consistency: plays his role, does his job, and shows up every game. He just hasn’t made any wow plays. He doesn’t have an interception, forced fumble, or fumble recovery. Who gets to stab Texcalibur: the player that caused the fumble or recovered it?

4. Silas Bolden: 17 catches, 174 yards, and 1 TD. But his true impact has been as the punt returner. He makes some very questionable reward v. risk decisions, but he has been great back there. He will house 2 before the season is over. He’s so very close.

Who are the others? TIA.

Texas BASEBALL - New 2026 Commit

Jack Smejkal - The Woodlands High School (Texas) 2026 commits to the Longhorns.

The Texas Baseball staff does not rest. The latest evidence of that is the commitment of RHP/SS Jack Smejkal, a very talented addition to the class of 2026.

A must watch prospect when toeing the rubber, Smejkal has a fastball that sits 91-94 with a spin rate of nearly 2500. In addition, Smejkal throws a very effective slider with a spin rate of 2500, generating a lot of swings and misses. He isn’t just a talented thrower though; he has a very good feel for pitching and likes to attack and go at hitters.

At the plate, Jack has seen solid improvement, especially in his physicality. This summer he has certainly flashed more power than he has in the past where he was more of a line drive hitter. Defensively, he is a very sure handed player at shortstop who moves very well and fields cleanly. He has a strong arm and combined with his athletic ability, he has the opportunity to stick on the left side in the future.

Smejkal is a Top 10 player in Texas for the class of 2026 and it is well evidenced when he is in the game, whether pitching or at the plate. He chose the Longhorns over Texas A&M and a number of other top programs around the nation, adding to an already impressive 2026 class for the Horns.

AT&T cell phone cost "plans" these days aka planned thievery

Diary of a poor here.

Talk about sinking to a new low of thievery these days...yes, this has been going on for awhile now I know.

Buying a new cell phone...talk about some crooked shit.

They advertise anywhere from "$2-$30"/month for a new cell phone for 36 months.

Well...if you break the phone you're on the hook for the difference in what you paid each month. Makes sense right? But decent phones these days are $500-$1000.

I get a new phone for $2/month for 36months. The phone costs $600 outright. 36months x $2 is $72. The AT&T insurance is $17/month. So $19 x 36 months is $684.

So lets say you go buy 3rd party phone care insurance for $5/month...that's $7 x 36 = $252 total.

But even if the phone breaks, you're STILL ON THE HOOK for the original cost of the phone minus the difference if you wanna activitate that new replacement phone under your same number. Yes you'll get a new phone through insurance (minus the deductible or depreciation), but gotdamn what a fvcking racket.

Only way to circumvent this thievery is to buy cheap unlocked phones outright from Amazon & pray it stays working for 1-3 years & it can handle the software updates.

Contain the Q and Dominate the Trenches | Players to Watch vs. Arkansas

Players to Watch for Arkansas

  • #40 - Landon Jackson, DL - 1 Thing: Jackson, (the brother of Texas '25 commit Lance Jackson) ranks Top 10 in the SEC in the following, 4th in Tackles(26), 8th in Total Pressures(32), 10th in Sacks(5), and 10th in Hurries(20), among EDGE Rushers.
  • #10 Taylen Green - 1 Thing: Green is known as a very athletic quarterback with the ability to pull down the ball and run at any moment with his 6'4 frame and long legs. One thing to take into account is that Green has an incredible 3.23 seconds (Time to Throw), the slowest in the SEC. Quinn Ewers is 2.52 seconds, and the fastest in the SEC. Green holds onto the football for almost 3/4 second longer per dropback. Green ranks 2nd lowest in the Power 5, while Ewers is 7th fastest. *WOW*

  • #2 - Andrew Armstrong, WR - 1 Thing: Armstrong is 2nd in the SEC with 857 receiving yards and just 1 touchdown. At 6'4 202 lbs, Armstrong is a matchup mismatch for most defenders and will likely see a good amount of Texas' most versatile defender and the No. 1 Graded Cover Corner in the SEC, Jahdae Barron(90.7). Armstrong leads the SEC with 84 targets, while his average depth of target is 11.7 yards downfield, which is equal to DeAndre Moore and Isaiah Bond.

  • #50 - Eric Gregory, DT - 1 Thing: Gregory is tied for first in the SEC among Defensive Lineman, with 20 Run Stops. Tied with Walter Nolan(Ole Miss) and Chris McClellan(Missouri). That is also good for 5th in the Power 5.

  • #9 - Luke Hasz, TE - 1 Thing: Hasz hasn't been targeted a ton this season, until the Mississippi State game. Over the last two games he has 9 targets, 9 receptions, 136 yards, and 3 touchdowns, while he had just 131 yards an 10 receptions over the first 7 games.

This is a Segment, presented by my great sponsor @Alex Dunlap and the NEW Football with Friends Beef Jerky, it's called "According to PFF"

1) According to PFF, Texas has 5 of the 7 best defensive linemen in Pass Rush Win Rate % (Wins per Snap). However, Landon Jackson(brother of Texas '25 commit Lance Jackson), leads both teams in Total Pressures(32), Sacks(5), and Hurries(20).

Screenshot-2024-11-06-at-8.39.21 PM.png

2) According to PFF, unlike last week, Texas completely leads in offensive linemen grading vs. Arkansas. Cam Williams is the only Starter for Texas who is NOT ranked ahead of Arkansas' Guard, Joshua Braun, in Pass Blocking Grade. Williams has 13 penalties this season, which is only two fewer than the rest of the starting linemen combined.

Screenshot-2024-11-06-at-8.45.54 PM.png

3) According to PFF, here are the 9 opponents Texas has played this season, sorted by Defensive Team Run Defense Grade. Texas rushed for 210 yards against Florida, 177 yards against Oklahoma, 143 yards against Michigan, 187 yards against UTSA, and just 29 yards against Georgia... Arkansas enters this week Ranked No. 2 among opponents.

Let's have a great end of the week 🤘

SEC Games

I'm finding myself becoming a bigger college football fan than I have been for several years. Admittedly, part of that could be that Texas is playing MUCH better football and is more fun to follow. But my fandom of Texas has never waned, even in the worst years, so I don't think that is it. Rather, I now find myself wanting to watch other SEC games and being highly entertained whereas when we were in the B12, I could not stand watching other teams' games. I knew being in a better league would be more fun as a Texas fan from the perspective of better competition, but I didn't realize that being in a better league would also be a better experience generally as a fan of college football. There are plenty of hot takes on this board, but I think this season has a good chance to finish very well for us, in addition to being a better football experience generally. Pretty cool. Hook 'em!

Today’s Gift (11-17)

“The moment anyone tries to demean or degrade you in any way, you have to know how great you are. Nobody would bother to beat you down if you were not a threat.” —Cicely Tyson

Have you noticed that when someone brings a new idea that has a potential to change the status quo that they are immediately attacked by those who are in control? I imagine y’all can think of countless examples of this phenomenon.

Most of the time these innovators, whether social or technology based, threatened those who were in control or were the market leaders.

This reminds me of a passage in Scripture where the Apostle Paul went into a city synagogue and preached the Gospel using the Old Testament to prove his case. The leaders in that city wouldn’t try to argue against the Scripture that he used to prove his beliefs or attempt to show him WHERE he was wrong in his interpretation. On the contrary, they didn’t like the result, i.e. that the leaders were no longer in control of the town’s people, that many left the old ways to follow the new way.

I find this fascinating to think about.

Be careful out there!

Acts 14:1-7

TSK

Confused about our SoS

I keep seeing Aggie’s and the like saying that the only reason we are so high is because of our week schedule and we haven’t played anyone.

But anytime I search strength of schedule. I feel like Texas is somewhere between 10 and 20 on every indicator I can find.

Where is the narrative that we have a terrible and easy schedule coming from exactly?

Genuine question, not looking for Homerism.

While we haven’t beaten a top 10 team at the moment, the schedule is a hole is not like we are Indiana or something.

Polymarket vs Polling

CNBC interviewed the 25 yr old CEO of Polymarket days after the election. Polymarket, a real life application of crowd theory, correctly called the election results hours before news agencies. And was showing a Trump victory days before the election. Supposedly Elon Musk was so confident in their information that he left the Trump party about 3 hours before the official announcement of victory.

And now his apartment is raided and his phone taken? What are Dems afraid of?

Where will the Joe Biden Presidential Library be located?

Some obvious options.

  • The HBCU where he went to undergrad.
  • Syracuse, the law school where he finished at the top of his class.
  • Scranton, PA. The site where he confronted CornPop, the most feared gang member on the East coast. Also where he spearheaded the Civil Rights and LGBTQ+ movements back in the 60s.

Any other options?

Anyone need a hotel for Kentucky game?

My son is playing in the Capital City Classic hockey tournament next weekend in Austin. We already had plans to be in town for the Kentucky game and stay with family, but these hockey tournaments (hosted by the Dallas Stars) require you to stay in a hotel dedicated to the hockey tournament for the whole weekend. If we don't pay for the room, he can't play and/or the team will be disqualified. Therefore, I have to pay for 3 nights and do not plan to stay in the hotel room.

SO, I have a hotel booked at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Austin Parmer/Tech Ridge for Fri-Mon if anyone wants to use my room. It's a King room, but I can probably call and switch to two beds if needed. It comes out to $140/nt with tax. More than willing to take $150 for the whole weekend (as I assume most won't stay through Monday) if anyone is interested. PM me if interested.
