MUSINGS FROM THE DISCH
Whew, what a weekend. The Longhorns, coming off a 4 game losing streak, including a mid-week beating at the hands of rivals Texas A&M travelled to Lubbock to kick off Big 12 conference play and find something in themselves to ignite the season. While it wasn't always pretty, the Horns leave Lubbock with exactly that, a series win over a team and program that live to hate the Longhorns and everything they stand for.
The Horns kicked off the weekend by absolutely demolishing the Red Raiders by a score of 22-8. Saturday afternoon was not quite the same story as the Tech pitching staff limited the Horns to just 2 runs as they cruised to a 7-2 win. On Sunday, things started off poorly, VERY poorly as the Horns saw 5 total pitches in the 1st inning, while Tech put up a 3 spot and chased starter Charlie Hurley from the game. What the Horns showed from the 2nd inning onward was grit. Texas fought each inning to claw its way back into the game and despite giving up 7 runs on the day, they were able to get a 6th inning lead and hold on for dear life with the bullpen coming through for a 9-7 win, giving them the series.
That series win could be one of those defining moments for the program this season as they now look ahead to a 10 game home stand in which they get Incarnate Word, Washington (x3), Air Force (x2), Baylor (x3), and Texas A&M Corpus-Christi. In addition, the Horns do not play a currently ranked team until April 19th, when they host TCU Horn Frogs at Disch-Falk.
What the Horns need to do is take the grit and Texas Fight they showed from this weekend and put their foot on the accelerator. Build up confidence, continue to work through the many ups and downs that will come with a shaky pitching staff and stack wins.
Speaking of the shaky pitching staff, the team ERA has now ballooned to over 4 and Coach Pierce and staff will need to get back to work in determining who is going to start and who will not. Lebarron Johnson Jr and Cody Howard are pretty much locked in as starters currently. Who will be the #3 man? Can Charlie Hurley work his way back? Can Tanner Witt continue to progress or will someone like Easton Tumis get a shot to win the starting role for the Horns on Sunday? In the bullpen, Coach Pierce has always worked his way through the arms to figure out who he can trust and in which situations. It feels like we are quickly approaching an inflection point where if you want to get innings, you better step up and show that you can throw a strike. This team does not have elite arms on it currently that can go out and get strikeouts at a prodigious rate. Instead, the bullpen arms need to realize that what they can do is trust their defense and simply attack, pitch after pitch. No more 2 out walks that come back to haunt, no more nibbling at the edges, throw it over that plate and keep it low.
In the mean time, enjoy the series win over the Red Raiders and the fact that as an athletic program in general, there is no need to ever go back to Lubbock.
