Today's Gift (1-11)

Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back into the same box.
~~~~~~~ Italian proverb
When the game is over, it all goes back in the box.
~~~~~~~ John Ortberg

How many times in our lives have we said something like "They're out of my league," or "How did I get here? I'm not smart enough to do this job." That's what's on the inside, so on the outside, we fashion a veneer for the world to see. Or we self-medicate (as one of my chemist friends used to say, with short-chain hydrocarbons), in the hope of improving our image. Eventually, we find ourselves being either inferior or superior to everyone around us, then wonder why we have no peers, no true friends.

The joy of being humble finds us when we begin to accept ourselves as different from, but no worse and no better than, anyone else. Then everyone can be our peer in some way. In recovery, it's the powerlessness---the inability to conquer this demon alone---that puts kings and pawns in the same box. From there, we can succeed together.

I give thanks for this community and the friendships it has forged, under the eyes of a loving God who meets us where we are. All of us.

Blessings and Peace.

Music licensing for businesses

Wanting to know if anybody had experience with Music licensing companies.
I have a small café in Houston, we do live music one night a week on Thursdays. It is 100% original singer, songwriters music that is being played. They do not play covers. We did buy the BMI license but SESAC is after us for their cut.
The artist that play here will never play any of their music libraries, so I don’t understand why I’m being bullied by this organization.
Any guidance would be appreciative.

NCAA to levy significant penalties against FSU

They shouldn’t have thrown such a hissy fit…

A Florida State assistant coach, offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, is found to have committed two Level II violations, which include impermissible recruiting activity and facilitating impermissible contact with an NIL-related booster. Atkins is alleged to have driven a prospect and his parents to a meeting with a leading member of the school’s NIL collective, Rising Spear.

As part of the penalties, Atkins will be suspended the first three games of the 2024 regular season and is given a two-year show-cause. A show-cause requires schools who hire Atkins to explain the decision to NCAA officials. Atkins is expected to remain on FSU’s staff in his current role.

In a first of its kind in the NIL era, the school must disassociate with the NIL collective representative for a term of three years. The school also must disassociate from the NIL collective for a term of three years as well. As part of the dissociation, FSU cannot accept assistance from the collective and the collective cannot contribute to the athletic program in any way. However, the collective is free to continue working with FSU athletes on NIL endeavors.

Other penalties include:

- two years of probation.

- scholarship reductions of five over the next two academic years.

- a reduction by seven in official visits for 2023-24.

- a prohibition on recruiting communication for six weeks over the next two academic years, including this next week (Jan. 12-18).

- a prohibition on communication with athletes in the transfer portal from April 15-21.

- a reduction by 18 evaluation days this spring.

- a financial penalty of 1% of the athletic department’s budget.

The biggest idiot at the Statesman

Congratulations, Cedric Golden! You just took over the top spot for this gem:

“Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers should return for this third season because there’s much potential for growth. Still, there are no guarantees he'd win the starting job as the Longhorns make their way to the SEC.”
