Updated 2025 LSR Rankings: The state of Texas is LOADED and mostly uncommitted

I feel like I've said this before, but... FINALLY, the 2025 LSR Top 100 list has been updated.

Click here for the full set of rankings.

As always, I encourage everyone to ask questions, make comments and engage in any way they want, but let me break out some thoughts about the rankings process.

1. I have 4 players rated with 5-star grades and another 10 players rated as high 4 stars, which makes for 14 super blue chips at this point in the process.

2. The recruiting tiers went like this...

5-star (6.1) - 1-4
High 4 (6.0) - 5-14
Mid 4 (5.9) - 14-29
Low 4 (5.8) - 30-80
High 3 - 81-100

4. I really, really like this class. This is the most 4-stars I have ever ranked at any point in my career. There's a lot of really good players this year. Keep in mind that every player between 30-80 have the same exact rating. I view them all the same from a rankings value standpoint.

5. Biggest risers

OT Ty Haywood - From 23 to No.5
CB Dorian Brew - From NR to No.10
LB Riley Pettijohn - From 39 to No.12
Ath Nick Townsend - From NR to No.14

6. Biggest fallers

DE Malcolm Simpson - From No.8 to No.28
QB Roy Thomas Jenkins - From No.15 to No.55
DT Dillon Battle - From No.21 to No.,56

7. 3 of the top 6 prospects are committed to three different schools, but none of the prospexts from 7-22 are committed. It's all still out there to play for.

8. Here are the super blue chips

Texas BASKETBALL Scouting Report: Kansas State Wildcats (Big 12 Tournament - 1st Round)

Conference tournament play is here which means that March is about to get exciting. The Horns are going to be taking on the Wildcats of Kansas State, in Kansas City this evening and you can feel the anticipation. The stakes are higher, and things are about to get interesting. The Big 12 finale! Let's dive into this matchup.

Tip Off: 6PM CT on ESPN+

Kansas State Scouting Report

Starting 5

#2 Tylor Perry (Sr)
Guard
5'11, 182lbs

15.2 PPG, 3.0 REB, 4.5 AST - 36 FG%, 33.2 3PT%, 91% FT

The North Texas transfer can fill it up, period. This is a guy that needs to be pressured all the way up the floor. Max Abmas is an above average on ball defender and can absolutely get the job done if he's locked in defensively, but man I would want Tyrese Hunter on this kid ALL. GAME. LONG. Perry is a guy that can shoot from anywhere on the floor; with a hand in his face, he's just an elite scorer. His percentages are down but when you shoot at the volume that he does that's bound to happen. Run him off the three point line, make him get into the paint and take contested jumpshots, force left.

#24 Arthur Kaluma (Jr)
Forward
6'7, 220lbs

14.8 PPG, 7.1 REB, 2.0 AST - 43 FG%, 35.3 3PT%, 75.2% FT

Arthur Kaluma feels like he's been around for forever, but it's mainly for how much basketball he's played at Creighton. The guy has just been consistent, and has played a bunch of minutes for teams that have made some substantial runs in the NCAA tournament, and is providing Kansas State with even more of an output offensively than he did at Creighton. He's a very long player that can really do everything but if you had to make him do one thing particularly it's shoot the ball from outside. Make him go left, BOX OUT. He's a player that's playing with a lot more freedom offensively, can act as a secondary ball handler etc and is playing with a ton of confidence. Take him out of his comfort zone early. He does not like being pressured when he has the ball, and wants to get down hill in a hurry.

#5 Camryn Carter (Jr)
Guard
6’3, 185lbs

14.9 PPG, 5 REB, 2.6 AST - 39.7 FG%, 30.7 3PT%, 84.1% FT

Cam Carter is probably my favorite player to watch for the Wildcats. He guards well; he plays extremely hard; he can get to the rim and finish with both hands at an elite level; he's very explosive; BUT......he's struggling shooting the ball. If you're Texas, you stick with the trend and make him take contested jumpshots from 15+ feet. Do not try and reinvent the wheel on how you guard this guy because he will punish you. My eyes tell me this is going to be the Chendall Weaver/Tyrese Hunter show in terms of a matchup, and Texas is fortunate to have some absolute DOGS on the defensive end of the floor.

#4 Dai Dai Ames(Fr)
Guard
6'1,185bs

4.6 PG, 1 REB, 1.8 AST - 32.6 FG%, 31.1 3PT%, 73% FT

It looks like Dai Dai Ames is starting to get more minutes but it's an interesting addition to the starting line up. He's a left that ALWAYS wants to get back to his left hand, is a serviceable shooter from outside, but MAN is he quick. If you're Texas this matchup is pretty straight up. Force him to his right hand, don't make a non-impact player make an impact, and contest every jumpshot. He's also been involved in a couple of scuffles including one where punches were thrown earlier this season. He's a guy who's emotions can get the best of him. Now I'm not saying talk shit, but I am saying that he's easily frustrated. Just play sound, fundamental defense.

#10 Jerell Colbert (RS Soph)
Forward/Center
6’10, 216lbs

2.7 PPG, 2.3 REB, 0.5 AST - 46.6 FG%, 0 3PT%, 55.3% FT

Not much to say on Colbert in that he's just big and athletic. Play him straight up, keep off the glass, don't let him make an impact. Make him turn back to his left shoulder.

Summary:

Kansas State is a team that has only won 5 out of their last 13(!) who's going to be limping into the conference tournament as a squad that's not playing their best basketball, going up against a Texas team that IS playing their best basketball. Texas is getting a healthier version of Dylan Disu, in a match up that favors Texas across the board. The Horns have more depth, they've been shooting better, and are playing a more cohesive game of basketball than they have at any point this season. I have Texas winning this game by double digits, 87-75.

Prediction Record: 4-0

Is it weird to list “Posting on Orangebloods” as a hobby?

Ok while protecting the identity of the innocent and my sauces, I can say that I came across a bio of a dude who listed “posting on Orangebloods.com” as one of his hobbies. Right there with golf, fishing, BBQ, and chess.

So I don’t want to unfairly label the guy as a douche or anything . . . butt is this even close to normal? I sometimes post a lot butt hardly consider this a hobby on par with following UT athletics, PIIHB, gambling, getting swole, improving my 40, and whatknot.

Anywho bro lemme know if I am being judgmental and if you wood put posting on OB down on resume as an official hobby/interest.

PROJECTED 2024 SPRING FOOTBALL DEPTH CHART: DEFENSE

2024-Depth-Chart-spring-2024-projection-DEF-.jpg

A few quick thoughts:

- As always an "OR" between players means they are interchangeable and probably represents a camp battle-type of situation we'll have to monitor. It does not matter who is listed first. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO IS LISTED FIRST WHEN THERE IS AN "OR" BETWEEN TWO PLAYERS!!!

- This was a nightmare to put together, and this projection -- mainly as it pertains to the front four -- should probably be looked at as more of a conversation-starter about what we COULD see next week rather than a definitive set of takes on what will actually occur -- especially at the beginning of practices where the staff is just starting to get a look at how these guys look on an actual football field together. There are so many new pieces on defense (including among key positions coaches), but we'll give it a try here:

- Obviously, the first item is the *idea* of moving Burke over to platoon the "starting" SDE/Jack role with Barryn Sorrell, which would bring Sorrell into more of a "regular" type of role on the team as opposed to the being the 4th-highest snap-percentage player on the team (62% of defensive snaps in 2023). Burke's body has grown and he's gotten better against the run, plus, he can still be a great pass-rush weapon from the JACK end. This makes room for uber-talented newcomers like Trey Moore and Colin Simmons on the other side, where they certainly profile as the best fits. The bottom line is that Texas HAS to create snaps for those two guys, and being able to move Burke from side-to-side would help to alleviate that problem.

- There's also the issue of Colton Vasek, who all of the sudden is actually heavier than Burke (256 pounds vs. 254 pounds). If we see Burke as a candidate to move over, we should probably also see Vasek as one for two reasons: 1) If Burke and Sorrell go pro next year, Vasek will be in the cat-bird's seat to deliver on his excellent recruiting profile and pedigree to generate really solid snaps next season opposite Moore and/or Simmons; and 2) Ketch's sources say that freshman Zina Omeozulu is a player who the staff sees (at least at the start) to be in competition along with Simmons and Moore, et al. over at the buck. If this is the case, than someone between Walton, Tapp, Vasek and possibly Akana? (who was playing inside LB last year during fall camp at least, but is listed at EDGE on the current roster) probably needs to migrate over to the strong-side, and at his new weight, Vasek would profile best to fit that bill.

- T'Vondre Sweat told me at the Combine that Alfred Collins can absolutely play nose, but we saw it only occasionally in 2023. However, Broughton was always playing 3-tech. I'll slot them that way for now. The depth at 3-tech is pretty easy to sort from the nose tackle depth given the respective players' sizes and play-styles, but the exact order of the depth is going to be something we see begin to play out this spring. At 6-5, 324 pounds, freshman Alex January becomes very intriguing as a guy to keep an eye on who could work his way into the rotation as a role player if his ascension during his senior season continues into spring camp.

- I've listed Anthony Hill at the Mike LB position as opposed to the WLB as he played mostly last season, more on that in the War Room.

- The things I'll be most interested to watch next week among the LBs and DBs? 1) How Kendrick Blackshire moves around at a whopping 261 pounds; 2) If Jahdae Barron does any lining up at outside corner in lieu of Terrence Brooks, and, if so, who would then take over at nickel; and 3) speaking of those nickel guys, whether that is where Jelani McDonald is primarily working, or if he is playing more safety.

WBB: Big 12 Tournament Final - #5 Texas Rolls Over ISU, 70-53

Texas gets a double-bye by virtue of being a Top 4 seed (#2). They will face the winner of BYU / Kansas in their 1st game Saturday at 5:30. The Longhorns faced each team once this season, beating Kansas 91-56 in mid-January and BYU 71-46 in their last regular season game. Kansas has been especially dangerous of late with 3 consecutive wins including #10 KSU and #18 OU (sux).

I'm actually hoping BYU pulls off the upset because the Longhorns match up better against the Cougs and the Jayhawks will be tough in what is effectively a home game for them.
