2021 Recruiting

I briefly mentioned 2021 4 star WR Latrell Neville as one of our WR targets. Get to know the name now, things seem to be heating up with him. He is ranked #125 overall and as the 23rd best WR in the nation. He represents the highest ranked in state WR on our board currently and he will be in town this weekend once the dead period ends.

If we land the guys we are leading for and if Bryce Foster comes with the total package. The way I see the 2021 offensive line class if they all started together it would be:

Tommy Brockermeyer - Left Tackle
Bryce Foster - Left Guard
James Brockermeyer - Center
Haden Connor - Right Guard
Savion Byrd - Left Tackle

This is the new standard for the class of beef.
Class of 1991. Trust me when I tell you that with the Brockermeyer boys coming in, the annals of history will be invoked and the ghost of the class of beef in 91 will be resurrected.

I've been following recruiting for a really long time, basically since I was in high school. I can remember about 4 real classes of beef. It was like we were on a 4 year cycle for a lot of those years. 1988 1991, 1994 or maybe 95. 2000 or was it 2001? After that we had good classes but nothing that defined a class like those were.

The one thing I've learned from all that recruiting is that no matter how great they look on paper and as high school players, they are still going to need time to develop and prepare for the college game. Every one of those classes when they came in took their lumps but by the time they were juniors and seniors they were great.

Too bad that was before the internet was invented.

If we get this class, oh my.

Blake Brockermeyer was an absolute beast. His boys have some very big shoes to fill to even get close to how good their dad was. I hope that they surpass him though at Texas, but it won't be easy in the least.

That would be incredible. I feel good about all 5 except for Foster (#13 OL), he has been an aggy lean. Though, I would have said the same about Connor (#25 OL). Having Connor and Milroe in Foster's ear certainly helps our chances there.

Donovan Jackson (#7 OL) would be another great get but seems to be an aggy lean. No one has even mentioned Rueben Fatheree (#19 OL) or Jaeden Roberts (#27 OL).

Oh, and BTW, Tommy Brockermeyer and Savion Byrd are the #1 and #2 OL in the nation. James Brockermeyer is the lowest rated of the bunch at #57 overall.

Texas is loaded with instate talent across the OL in 2021.
Just to follow this up by saying I feel better about Foster today compared to early yesterday. Still a tough get from A&M, he has family there as students and I believe a brother who is a walk-on ball player. Milroe and Conner will be on him big time. Mike Roach dropped a speculative crystal ball in our favor yesterday.

At this point, I don't know who we will get as offensive linemen, i just know as long as we get Byrd and the Brockermeyer brothers everything else is icing. If Texas decided that they were going to stop right now recruiting offensive linemen for the 2020 class I'd be good with it.

Getting 2 classes of 5 in a row is not overkill it's a little heavy but definitely do able if you only take 3 in 2022. Both classes will red shirt the majority.

How weird will it be to have enough offensive line depth that a key injury doesn't derail the whole season (Connor Williams).

The weekend got off to a good start with a commitment from 2021 TE prospect Juan Davis. He isn't too highly rated at this point but I think part of that is he is listed as either an athlete or QB/WR. He spent at least part of his sophomore season playing QB.

He will likely be more clearly classified as a TE going forward though I do see him fitting nicely into the LJH role at Texas. Watch his film and you will see a lot of similarities to LJH. He certainly fits the large WR mold, already 6'4" and 220 lbs.

Latrell was on commitment watch this weekend and while that may not happen (still has a few hours) things still look good for him and Texas.

I would also keep a close eye on Billy Bowman. He is listed as the 121st best player in the nation as an Athlete. It does seem like he will land on the defensive side of the ball.

Check out Billy Bowman's Hudl highlights. As a sophomore, he started both ways at Denton Ryan. That right there says a lot. On film, he excels as a cover corner with great ball skills. This is likely his long term position. He also is very good in the return game with a handful of TDs this past season. He's an electric WR that Denton Ryan used a lot in the short game - jet sweeps, bubble screens. He's got the speed and the wiggle to take a short pass the distance.

He is ranked #88 overall and as the #9 athlete.

Billy Bowman Jr. out of Denton Ryan just committed to the good guys. He is a 4star, 3 sport athlete that played both ways as a sophomore last year at Denton Ryan. Many are projecting him for the defensive side of the ball; however his commitment pictures were with Coach Beck. Big time athlete and another one of the #dallastoaustin products (if you consider Denton, Dallas)

He kinda reminds me of D'shawn Jamison in that regard. Get him on campus, see where the needs are at the time and let him loose. Could easily be a return guy or offensive gadget freshmen year and then transition to DB if needed. Folks seem to think that is where he fits best.

2021 Shadrach Banks of North Shore commits to aggy. Kid is a stud. That sucks. I don’t want to see a&m getting a pipline into NS. That’s a long way off. Hopefully he’ll change his mind.

North Shore receiver Shadrach Banks verbally commits to Texas A&M

North Shore receiver Shadrach Banks verbally commits to Texas A&M
Shadrach Banks wasn’t necessarily a secret last season - especially on Houston’s eastside - but if the North Shore receiver’s name was foreign in any other corner of the city, that was swiftly rectified.

Now Banks takes his brightened star to College Station. The junior verbally committed to Texas A&M on Thursday, giving the Aggies one of the country’s top Class of 2021 prospects.

Listed as an athlete, Banks is ranked 10th overall in 247Sports’ Class of 2021 rankings for the state.

He was a sophomore sensation for the state champion Mustangs, particularly through the playoffs and penultimately in the Class 6A Division I state title game with nine catches for 179 yards and two scores in a 41-36 win over Duncanville. Banks finished with 1,312 yards recovering and 17 touchdowns in 2018.

Line Backer
Derrick Harris
4 Star (?)
New Caney high school
Class of 2021
Committed today to The University of Texas
This class is lining up to be really REALLY good.
As a sophomore, Harris was already out athleting his competition by a wide margin. He just straight up ran by blockers to blow up a lot of plays in the backfield. There is no doubt he has the speed and lean at this point to be an edge rusher. What we need to see more of is his physicality and ability to take on blockers as he won't be able to just run by everyone at the college level.

His long term position will be determined by his ongoing physical development. His film looks like a B-backer to me right now with his ability to come screaming off the edge. However, many think that as he bulks up over the next 2 years he could become a MAC or Rover. Time will tell. Either way, this is a quick and physical young man who has pledged to play for Texas. Check out his highlights.

As I mentioned in the 2020 thread, things are really close to wrapping up with that class. 3 guys likely to commit and then some long shots. Time to really start focusing on the 2021 class that is already shaping up nicely.

With 7 commits already Texas is off to a much earlier start than previous classes. On top of that, we are looking very good for a handful of elite recruits. It really could be an incredible class with all the in state talent.

Keep an eye on Jatavion Sanders this weekend. He is a high 4 star Ath who plays DE and WR at the 5A level. He has really good film, as a soph. against good competition. That says a lot about his talent right there. He probably plays DE at the next level. He is visiting this weekend and is on commitment watch for sure.

O-line recruiting

Texas was already looking to take an elite OL class in 2021 but things may get even better than expected.

Texas has been favored all along for 5 star and top OT Tommy Brockermeyer and his 4 star brother, C James. They have also been favored for the other 5 star Texas OT, Savion Byrd. It was a bit of a surprise when 4 star OT Hayden Conner committed (influenced by QB Jalen Milroe) and the Conner and Milroe connection has also made Texas more of a contender for the top OG in the nation Bryce Foster who was thought to be a heavy aggy lean.

More recently, top 50 OT, Donovan Jackson who has been felt to be an aggy lean has picked up momentum with Texas.

If they could pull in all 6 of those guys (still a long shot) that would be 4 guys in the top 64 with another ranked in the 160s and a 4 star center ranked 313. This isn't even mentioning possible fall back plans of guys like Ruben Fatherlee, Jonah Miller and Jaeden Roberts who are highly ranked in their own right.

bump back to page 1
Things slowed a bit on 2021 which is probably a good thing. Evaluate some more guys off of Junior film before pressing forward too much further.

Things continue to look very promising in this class. O-line class will likely be one of the best ever. Things look good with Tommy Brockermeyer, Savion Byrd and now even more so with Donovan Jackson. Having Hayden Conner and #Milroe on board help with Bryce Foster but that's still a long shot. James Brockermeyer would give us one of the top centers in the nation to wrap up the class. Other studs in the state and around the country to fill gaps on any misses.

Now that 2020 is signed, sealed and delivered let's reset things on the 2021 class.

Current Commits
Ja'Tavion Sanders (#4 Ath, #46 Overall) - will likely land at DE/OLB, also plays WR for Denton Ryan
Jalen Milroe (#3 DT-QB, #65 Overall)
Billy Bowman (#7 Ath, #81 Overall) - DB/WR/Return specialist
Derrick Harris Jr (#12 OLB, #152 Overall)
Hayden Conner (#28 OT, #232 Overall)
Lake McRee (#14 TE, #355 Overall)
Juan Davis (#35 TE, #412 Overall)

Just a reminder that Texas is off to a hot start in 2021 with these 7 commitments, including 3 in the top 100 and 5 in the top 250. Despite coaching changes, all seem solid to Texas in word and deed as 6 of the 7 were back on campus for the elite Junior day and had lots of great things to say about the new staff. The exception is Lake McRee who may have to re-evaluate things after a really gnarly knee injury may compromise his playing ability. I'll talk more about each player whenever we get to talking about their position specifically.

Overview of 2021 recruiting: Offense

QB
Preston Stone - Stone seemed to be the top target early but it appears some things occured behind the scenes that led Texas to move on a bit. Stone has since committed to SMU.

Here is my initial take on his talent- "His film makes him look like a Johnny Manziel starter pack. He is very quick and elusive in the backfield, often buying extra time and then rifling a pass downfield. While he is a very effective runner, he doesn't rely on his legs. Once pressured, he eludes rushers but keeps his eyes downfield, always looking to make the pass instead of taking off on the run. In the pocket or on the move he drops absolute dimes on the deep ball and puts the ball in the perfect spot on timing routes."
- It will be interested to watch his career play out at SMU if he sticks with that commitment. He could be an all time great for them.

Jalen Milroe (Commit) - Jalen will compete all cycle with Stone for the top QB in state and possibly in the nation honors.
Jalen's junior year highlight film is fun to watch. Jalen is very elusive in the backfield but keeps his eyes downfield and is able to find the open WR and put it on him. He shows good pocket presence and hits WR in stride across the middle and deep down the field. When he takes off to run, he has elite speed and ability to make tacklers miss. He will be a great fit in Tom Herman's offense.

Texas may opt to take two QBs, a plan that Milroe is apparently on board with as well. Garrett Nussmeier was offered recently.

RB
Camar Wheaton - the top RB in the nation and the only 5 star RB currently. Texas has to land players like this when they pop up in their own backyard. There is certainly mutual interest but this is going to be a dog fight.

LJ Johnson - The 4th best RB in the nation and certainly a close 2nd to Wheaton in state. Texas would love to have him in addition to or to partner with Wheaton.

Brandon Campbell - a 4 star RB in state but I believe he left Texas out of his "top 5" or so a while back. There still seems to be interest so hopefully Texas can stay in play if things don't pan out with Wheaton or Johnson.

WR
Cody Jackson - Made an early commitment to OU. Texas has offered and will probably keep communication open but this one seems to have been decided early.

Quaydarius Davis - Davis committed and then decommitted to Texas already. That said, it seems as though Texas has recovered and is once again considered the front runner here. Davis is the #13 WR and #76 Overall player so he would be a great get. He has good height and crazy athleticism.

JoJo Earle - Texas doesn't have a lot of high profile WRs this class but JoJo represents another high end player who seems to be the top pick for Texas in the slot. This one is in favor of Texas currently and would be a great complement to Davis.

Theodore Knox - Texas has done a good job of getting more involved in this commitment recently and Knox has reciprocated the interest. He would be a good get as the #28 WR and #143 player overall.

Other names to know, Bryson and Blaine Green, Latrell Neville. All 3 are top 50 WRs with early Texas offers.

TE
Texas currently has commitments from Lake McRee and Juan Davis. As mentioned previously, McRee may be looking elsewhere at this point after suffering a severe knee injury. Davis plays QB currently and is listed as a QB. I think Texas would like to get one more TE.

Dametrious Crownover is a 4 star TE from and number 5 in the nation who hails from Texas. Texas very recently offered him so hopefully they can move to the forefront of his recruitment.

Other names to know Elijah Arroyo, Var'Keyes Gumms, Landen King.

OL
Tommy Brockermeyer is the top OT in the nation and number 3 player overall. A true stud and Texas legacy. A feel less optimistic now than over the summer as Tommy and his brother seem to be looking around at all the national powerhouses. Texas has the inside edge with his dad and brother both playing for the horns but Tommy and James have the talent to blaze their own trail. I really hope in the end the home state school wins out.

James Brockermeyer is now ranked as a 4 star center (3rd highest center). He is a take regardless of his brother and a true experienced center prospect is always needed.James was slower to get the nationwide attention of his brother but that has changed this winter as many of the big time programs have offered James.

Savion Byrd is the other 5 star OT in the state and the number 12 player in the nation. He has good size and great athleticism. Landing Byrd would certainly help ease the loss of the Brockermeyers if that does indeed occur. Things look good between Byrd and Texas currently

Hayden Conner - Hayden jumped on board early and is a solid first piece of the OL class. He is very smart and large at almost 6'6 and 315 pounds. He could slot inside as a guard but does have the potential to remain at tackle.

Bryce Foster - Conner's current teammate is the second highest ranked guard in the nation and those two in combination dominate upfront for Katy Taylor. Foster is an aggy legacy so they are felt to be the favorite but Texas has made good progress recently. The quartet of Conner, Foster, Jalen Milroe and Tunmise Adoyele are very close and landing all 4 would be an incredible coup.

Donovan Jackson things seem to be getting more favorable for Texas for the player previously felt to be an aggy lean. However, we recently committed to tOSU.

Rueben Fatheree and Jaeden Roberts are important targets to keep in mind as well. Both are ranked in the top 150 currently and could serve as really stellar back up options at Tackle and Guard respectively. That is how crazy deep this years OL class is in Texas.

Could the coronavirus experience influence players' college choices? Would they choose places closer to their family?

Man I'm telling ya SC is getting some kind of serious in recruiting this year. In TX they got a commit from a 4* rb Brandon Campbell and a 5* receiver and one time TX committ Quaydarius (that really is his first name) Jackson. What happened with this QJ kid?

Last year SC finished tenth in Pac XII recruiting and that is completely unacceptable at SC. Is there any coach sitting on a seat hotter than Clay Helton ? No but he's going to go down swinging.
