Humble Atascocita wide receiver Keith Wheeler II hasn’t even finished up his sophomore season, but college coaches have already taken notice of the 2022 standout. Wheeler has an early offer from Arkansas and was recently in Austin for an unofficial visit to see the Longhorns take on Kansas State. Wheeler came into that contest expecting to see an exciting game and he got just that, with Texas wining on a last-second field goal.
“It was a pretty good game and it was a great environment,” Wheeler said. “Texas has a good environment for all their games.”
After the game was over, Wheeler got a chance to chat with Texas assistant coach Corby Meekins, who told the young prospect to stay focused and keep working. The Longhorns don’t traditionally offer sophomores, but Wheeler said if Texas was to extend a scholarship at a later point it would certainly hold his interest.
“I’ll strongly consider them. They’re one of my top picks if they do offer me,” Wheeler said. “It’s a home-state school and I like how they use the ball, air it out to the big receivers.”
In addition to Texas, the 6-2, 170-pound Wheeler has his eye on a couple other schools as well, including Texas A&M, Arkansas and Houston. It’s still very early in the process and Wheeler’s body is still developing, but he’s a prospect to keep an eye on in the next couple years.
“I feel like I can get bigger and get better at my route running a little bit,” Wheeler said. “My strengths are probably my blocking and taking in a lot of coaching.”
Along with Texas, Wheeler said Southern Cal has shown some early interest.
