First time to Kyle Field in 4 decades of following Texas football. Almost went to A&M when choosing schools back in the 80’s. Being there yesterday left me (and my son) appreciative that I chose Texas back then. Observations:

1. The game day production value in the stadium is poor. It is loud (think DKR at Bama game) but there are no lights, drones, or crowd participation events (other than their chants which don’t really rile things up much). No turning on your camera light on your phone, no Texas Fight or Boomer Sooner etc. Loud, yes, but not electric. The best thing they have is the towel waving, but people stop doing it if they get behind.

2. The atmosphere around the stadium has the feel of being in a giant office park on a weekend. Flat, boring, uninteresting architecture, and low energy. There was one tailgating area (similar to those white tents around the LBJ library) that was cool and Grove-ish, and they had a smaller copy of Bevo blvd that was pretty lame.

3. For a school focused on engineering , they have surprisingly poor crowd and traffic flow. All fans in my quadrant of the stadium were funneled through one exit bottleneck that was 5 stories high and took 30 mins to pass through. Same with the parking garage. It was 90 mins after the end of the game before I was driving home .

We were treated with respect or indifference by their fans, but ultimately it was just kind of a bizarre culture on display, poorly executed, and in an undesirable setting.
