As always, we'll give analysis along with the tiered rankings (now updated through the KSU game) which are derived via a proprietary scoring formula, and based on the following advanced charting statistics (please note the distinctions in how tackles, etc. are counted and why these stats will always differ from the official university stats):

***Please note for 2019: -1 point has been added for any defensive penalty outside of defensive pass interference which is always considered a coverage burn and is not double-counted.***

VERSUS KANSAS STATE

Not much to complain about this week, the Texas defense looked like a group ready to absolutely give up on the season to start the contest versus KSU, but, we give credit to -- shudder -- Todd Orlando for holding the line and weathering the storm. We give more credit to the players for doing the same, and, to a lesser degree, Tom Herman himself for doing his best to create a culture that will breed resiliency and toughness. A Charlie Strong football team would have absolutely, 100% tucked its tail given up after the first quarter.

We don't know why it took so long for Texas to go to a "true" four-down lineman personnel grouping. As is often the case, the cries of observers on the message boards and among us here at the Deep Dig are eventually rolled out by the staff to which we say, "See! I told you so!" It's been all-too-obvious all season that the Longhorns' three down linemen not only struggled to cause disruption on their own, but in the run game, the lack of defensive bodies with their hands in the dirt through the trenches also allowed enemy O-linemen to get to the second level and more cleanly to engage Texas linebackers. We saw in the case of Juwan Mitchell this week -- who was uber-effective -- that having four men down more often allowed him to rack up much, much more than just a season high in run-stuffs -- the dude DOUBLED HIS SEASON TOTAL in one game.

Give us more run-blitzing from Mitchell on early downs and less long-developing safety blitzes from the cheap seats, which lead to easy hot reads for the opposing QB, on third downs any day of the week.

And yes, Texas only really lined up with 4 "true" defensive linemen 8 times, but we have to remember that this was on only 52 total defensive snaps. So Texas utilized this personnel grouping over 15% of the time and if you project a 50/50 run/pass split for the opponent, you can do some fuzzy math that says KSU faced this upgraded version of the Texas run defense on about a third of its run snaps. That suddenly feels a lot more significant.

Here's how often Texas has used four true down linemen thus far in 2019: (Note that we don't consider a package where a LB like Joseph Ossai or Byron Vaughns, etc. is aligned with his hand in the dirt as being a "true" 4-down set although technically that resembles a 4-down alignment).

TCU: Never
Kansas: 1.21% of the time
Oklahoma: Never
WVU: Never
Oklahoma State: 1.23% of the time
Rice: 5.7% of the time
LSU: Never
La Tech: Never

We'd look back to previous seasons, but we don't need to because the need for a 4th "true" DL column in the standard Deep Dig sheet didn't need to be added under Herman and Orlando until the Rice game this year. It's ironic that Brian Davis of the AAS actually asked Herman at his press conference why the team got away from four-down linemen in this game when it was literally the the possible watershed game in this respect.

On the back end ....

Anthony Cook and Jalen Green played the majority of this game and played well (outside of Green's idiotic and cockamamie targeting ejection) but D'Shawn Jamison is still grading out as the team's best CB both from a production and efficiency standpoint. Look no further than the game-changing play he made in limited duty this week, getting in most of his work on the third-down package before having to fill in late for the ejected Green. In all, here are the updated CB metrics through this week:
