After a few weeks of practice, it's time to make a bit of an overhaul to the initial depth chart projections we had coming into fall camp, much like the exercise we went through last week with some semi-significant changes on the offense.

CHANGES

- Chris Brown moved above BJ Foster as starting safety rather than having an "OR" between the two, indicating a camp battle. We're now into late August and sources remain steady in saying that Brown is ahead of Foster for the starting safety spot opposite Caden Sterns. At some point, we have to label Brown as the starter, even if the opportunity occurs at some point in the future for Foster to retake the role.

- Subsequently, Foster moved to depth at the nickel position where he played just under 6% of his snaps last season. In reality, though, Foster is likely to see the field often in a sub-package role, box-safety type of position when the team goes to a dime (6 DBs) which will include a third safety even if he doesn't start at a traditional safety or nickel. He played 58% of his snaps in these sorts of sub-package roles.

- D'Shawn Jamison switched from a camp battle with Josh Thompson to an outright starter. He has been a fixture of the defense this camp period and appears about as locked-in as they come.

- Jalen Green switched from a projected starter to now being "in the mix" to start, pending ongoing camp battle with Josh Thompson.

- Jalen Hullaby has received positive buzz from workouts and is moved directly behind David Gbenda/Marcus Tillman-tier as depth at inside linebacker.

- Jaylan Ford has also been receiving very positive reviews as a guy who can do a lot of things on defense, for this reason, I have made two changes: added him as possible depth at inside linebacker and changed his depth designation at the JACK to in consideration for third-string reps behind Joseph Ossai and Byron Vaughns.

- Myron Warren moved from in consideration to be a direct backup at either the 3-tech or the nose to strictly third-team at the nose given his recent weekend trip to the transfer portal, and the positive reviews we've heard of T'Vondre Sweat working behind Keondre Coburn.

- Alfred Collins moved from consideration for second-team SDE to consideration with Vernon Broughton for second-team 3-tech behind Ta'Quon Graham. Collins has been working "almost exclusively" inside at the 3-tech, and it's becoming clear that both he and Broughton will have at least complementary contributor duties in 2020 with potential to move all the way up into the starting rotation should Graham flounder (which, given his slow rate of development thus far at Texas, is nowhere near out of the question). I remember, as a recruit, Collins spoke about his college choice after a camp at Texas as a place he would be spending "the next three years," indicating his impression has always been that he'd play very early -- and also leave early for the NFL.
