The Athletic's Andy Staples appeared on my podcast (Your Drunk Uncle's Sports Podcast) this week, and we discussed a number of topics. I asked him a lot about the current state of college football, recruiting, and we also discussed Longhorn football.
Here are the highlights:
- Andy is using this time to touch up on how to make a great brisket. He talked about using a chili seasoning at one point. No, he does not like beans in his chili.
- He believes every conference will eventually postpone spring football. Andy explains why it is just a matter of time.
- When it comes to other teams being ahead of Texas in terms of spring practice, Andy does not expect the Longhorns to receive extra practice days to even the score. He said teams like Texas "will have to suck it up." He anticipates each team receiving extra practice days in the fall.
- Andy believes the recruiting calendar will be extended.
- Andy said he was surprised Herman used a "get out of jail" free card with the coaching changes after last season. He did not think Texas was at that place, but had positive things to say about Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash. In addition, he spoke with Ash last year, and the new Texas defensive coordinator spent a lot of time studying every defense in the Big 12 to see what works.
- He believes Tom Herman's season can be successful if Texas makes it to the Big 12 title game. He does not think Herman said to win the title. Instead, Andy says Texas has to catch up to Oklahoma and be in that game every year.
- In addition, he said it might be time to admit Oklahoma replaced one all-time great coach (Bob Stoops) with another all-time great coach (Lincoln Riley).
- Andy also said Texas needs to get to a place when it can consistently beat conference teams on the schedule, such as TCU and Oklahoma State.
The podcast is free. If you are a Longhorn fan, it is worth the listen:
