Below is a good breakdown (from texlaw88 on 247):

"As you may recall, about a month ago, the Statesman posted an article that showed the Texas Athletic Department lost $8.135 million for the last year. The report is now available on the Texassports.com site at
Interestlingly, the athletic department actually INCREASED its direct support to the University from $9.21 million in 2013 to $9.721 million in 2014. This is in addition to paying $10.8 million in student aid, $7.6 million for facility maintenance expenses, and $17.8 million for debt service for facility upgrades and $1.3 million to support spirit groups.
So the "loss" reported by the Statesman really resulted from the Athletic Department maintaining the substantial level of support to the University notwithstanding reduced net revenues to do so, in recognition that the department had extraordinary expenses resulting from the football coach transition. The athletic department still has a positive balance at year end of approximately $38 million, so it is in a very enviable position comparative to virtually any other university."
