From Dustin:

The Alumni and some Texas players defeated Texas 1-0 in the annual Alumni Game. A few thoughts:

--- I didn’t get to see him, unfortunately, because I was at basketball, but sounded like Ty Madden threw the ball well. David Pierce actually said Madden indicated his arm felt just a tad heavier than normal, no pain, but he was still up to 95 MPH with his fastball and his confidence is growing with his sharp slider.

--- After seeing him some in the fall and again today, it’s hard not to think Texas hit the jackpot with freshman lefty Sam Walbridge. Pete Hansen is a name you’ve probably heard more about because he’s positioned to compete for a weekend rotation spot as a freshman.

Walbridge is heading towards a relief role, but he could make an impact. Texas simplified his pitch arsenal to fastball and curveball, and both pitches were strong today. His fastball was up to 93 MPH with life, and his big curve has the makings of a plus pitch around 73-74 MPH. Pierce said Walbridge’s tempo has really improved and his competitiveness is beginning to show.

“Our goal with all of our freshmen, truly other than probably Hansen because he's proven he's a big strike-thrower, is to really get them in three to six-out innings, or outings, and continue to build their role, continue to build their confidence,” Pierce said about freshmen arms.

Another freshman, righty Jared Southard, was up to 92 MPH, and snapped off a few good curves around 81 MPH. Strike-throwing is the hurdle Southard needs to clear, and if he does, with stuff like he showed today, he can make an impact out of the bullpen.

--- Junior Murphy Stehly started at third base, along with the projected starting lineup for the Longhorns, and Pierce stated he’s the leader for that spot right now. Stehly took one of the better swings of the day when he hit a deep fly out to the warning track in left-center.

“Yeah, definitely,” responded David Pierce about Stehly being the leader at third base right now. “I mean he's played really well at short and at third base. There's days he’s going to swing the bat really well and then some days he's going to just look overmatched. But at the same time, he competes really well and I think he can do some small things - playing the short game. He's very solid. He's a guy that you can depend on right now.”

--- Looking around the diamond it was obvious the 2020 Longhorns should be more athletic, especially if Douglas Hodo III works his way into some noticeable playing time as expected.

--- As for what Pierce wants to accomplish in the less than two weeks he has left to practice, this was his response:

“Well I really would like to see us refine our pitching. I think there's a lot of things happening there that are right. I want to be able to speed up the game in practice and kind of create some chaos so they're prepared, especially those young guys in the middle, and then really just slowing them down at home plate and getting them comfortable seeing the baseball. And if we can accomplish those things, I think we can grow daily.”

From @BlakeSkaggs:

The 2020 Alumni Game was dominated by the guys on the mound. Leading the charge was RHP Ty Madden, who will most likely be the Saturday starter for Texas. He pitched four solid innings against the Alumni. Opposing starter (for the alumni team) Justin Eckhardt dealt two innings with limited damage, only one hit. Those two set the tone for the day as the long list of throwers on both sides only allowed one run all day, which happened to be a sacrifice fly by Kody Clemens off of the arm of Kam Fields.

After the full seven innings of play, nine Texas pitchers had taken the mound, and only nine hits total resulted. Only error of the game was an errant throw by Trey Faltine that slipped out of his hand.

Winning Pitcher: Will Swope (1 IP, 0 BB, 0 H)
Save: Mason Bryant (1IP, 1 BB, 1 H, 2 SO)
Loss: Ty Madden (4 IP, 2 BB, 2 H, 3 SO)
