ATLANTA (The Dodd Trophy) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Texas Head Football Coach Charlie Strong has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week. To read the release from The Dodd Trophy, click HERE.
The Dodd Coach of the Week Award honors the football coach whose program embodies the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week.
"What a huge win for Coach Strong and his Longhorns," said Jim Terry, Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "To come from behind and knock off a previously-undefeated team certainly qualifies as one of the biggest wins of the weekend and makes Coach Strong a deserving honoree for this week's award."
Texas hosted No. 8 and unbeaten Baylor in Austin searching for its second conference win of the season. The Longhorns scored the game's final nine points to come from behind for the upset victory. A field goal with less than a minute to play put Texas up for good as it handed Baylor its first loss of the 2016 season. Coach Strong's Longhorns improved to 4-4 on the season and 2-3 in the Big 12.
Saturday's win over Baylor marked Coach Strong's fifth win against a ranked opponent during his three seasons with the Longhorns. The Texas football team has seen success in the classroom as well under Strong's tenure, boasting a notable Academic Progress Rate score of 971 last year. Coach Strong saw 10 of his student-athletes named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 team, as well as 44 student-athletes on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll for Fall 2015.
Coach Strong has also had an active presence in the Austin community. He hosts the annual Greater East Austin Football Clinic for less fortunate children. He's been known to make surprise visits to patients at the Austin Children's Hospital, as well as a local center for the homeless, especially during the holiday season.
"The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is proud to honor Coach Strong after an impressive upset win for his Longhorns," said Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Chairman Percy Vaughn. "Coach Strong is certainly deserving of this week's accolades and we wish him and his team continued success this season."
The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
The winner of the 2016 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Week. A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
