Katy High School has a rich history of putting out top running backs, and Deondrick Glass is looking to carry on that tradition. A member of the 2019 recruiting class, Glass has been on college radars for a few years but has recently started to ramp things up with a couple college visits, including a recent stop in Austin for a Texas Longhorns junior day.
For Glass, who holds a Texas offer, it was a good experience overall, including getting some extended time with Texas head coach Tom Herman and running backs coach Stan Drayton.
“I got quality time with coach Drayton and coach Herman. They’re both really good guys,” Glass said. “Coach Drayton, I can tell he’s not fake. He’s real. He really wants to see me succeed. He said he’s willing to do whatever he can to make sure I get to the next level, and he’ll do his best to prepare me for the next level. It’s a half and half deal, he can give me all the resources but I have to be the one to take it and do it.”
Glass is pretty open at this early stage of the recruiting process, but does admit the Longhorns are high on his list. He has a friend and former Katy running back Kyle Porter currently on the Texas team, and incoming freshman defensive tackle Moro Ojomo is another former Katy teammate.
“Texas, it’s up there. It’s close to home, I also have people like Kyle Porter and Ojomo that’s going here or will be going here,” Glass said. “So I know I can talk to them if I need help with anything and they can tell me about stuff that they’ve been through to help me get through college.”
Porter and Glass were a key tandem in Katy’s state championship run in 2015, when the Tigers dominated the competition on their way to a state championship. Glass says he wouldn’t mind reuniting with Porter, who has already been in Glass’s ear.
“Kyle definitely is (recruiting him). Moro hasn’t gotten here yet, but I’m pretty sure we want to be on the same team again if it’s possible. I’d definitely like to see that again. I’d also like to play on the same team with Kyle Porter,” Glass said. “2015 was a special year, winning a championship and we were also the number one team in the country that year. So there was a special bond between us. It was a one-two punch, maybe we could do that again.”
Along with Texas, Glass lists Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia as schools that are high on his list, although he says he’s going to consider each and every school that is willing to give him an opportunity to play. Currently, he holds more than 20 scholarship offers from programs all over the country.
“I’m not really in a rush right now. I’m just taking my time, weighing all my options,” Glass said. “Nobody is definitely out right now. I’m just making sure I’m keeping my eyes open and keeping my heart open.”
As for Texas and his conversations with Drayton, Glass said the Texas running backs coach told him he wants to help him maximize his potential. Glass has high expectations for himself, and liked what he heard from Drayton during his junior day visit.
“He’s looking for someone who sets goals, but not also setting goals but also trying to achieve their goals. That’s a big thing, he doesn’t want people who are fake, who are setting goals but not trying to achieve them. He wants people who are going to set their goals and also know they’re going to work to try to achieve them,” Glass said. “My main goal is to make it to the NFL and play there for a while, maybe if I’m lucky go to the Hall of Fame. He said he’s going to work to help me get to that level of play.”
Along with Texas, Glass holds offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Auburn, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Florida and Florida State, to name a few. Glass is rated as a four-star prospect.
