LB/DE Breckyn Hager (37)
Takeaways
- At least Naashon Hughes isn't missing tackles, because he is generating absolutely zero productivity this season otherwise. I almost think this could be some kind of mistake because it seems impossible: Hughes hasn't been credited for so much as even a piddly QB pressure despite playing the sixth-most snaps of any player on the team while playing the apex pass-rushing role on the unit. Continuing to allow Hughes to dominate snap percentages at the B-Backer position simply because he's a team captain just seems like stubborn arrogance from the defensive coaching staff.
- Malcolm Roach (while he has had a smallish handful of wonderful plays such as the fourth-down stuff versus USC where he crossed the guard's face to fill A-gap and shut down the runner) is being neutered as a dynamic pass-rusher from the DE position. He needs to bump out to B-Backer and take snaps from Hughes.
- This should be a no-brainer as Charles Omenihu has emerged as a player who can truly generate excellent disruption ability from that very spot and should be playing more. Getting Omenihu and Roach on the field at the same time with Roach playing in more of a natural OLB role will give an immediate boost to productivity in the QB disruption department.
- It's interesting to see John Bonney so high on the coverage efficiency metrics, but it likely has most to do with his very small sample of plays being utilized in only the Cowboy dime package. While his snaps are down, Bonney is one player the staff (in the complete opposite ways of Roach and Hager) has actually found a way to get the most out of.
- Can you believe that Malik Jefferson is currently the team's second-most effective QB disruptor? Now he just needs to move out of the position of Texas' second-worst tackle-misser and we'll be talking about a player who's made unbelievable strides from 2016 to 2017.
