This shutdown is about two things:
1. Democrats do not want to give Trump one of his campaign promises. They want this to be like Bush 41's "no new taxes" broken pledge.
2. Democrats are for open borders as this is the only way to replenish their voting base, which as it matures and becomes more knowledgeable and more wealthy, votes Republican. They know a wall will work and want to only fund things they can de-fund later.
The US debt grew $8,588,000,000,000 under Obama. If the President of the United States asks for 0.058% of that for beanie babies, you give it to him to keep the government open.
