The Texas Longhorns are gearing up for their first big recruiting weekend of the 2018 recruiting season with Saturday's upcoming junior day, but Texas did have a bit of a preview event on Sunday with an unofficial visit from top defensive back prospect D'Shawn Jamison.
The Houston Lamar product made his way to Austin with his father and his girlfriend and said he really liked everything he saw and heard, including the message from cornerbacks coach Jason Washington about how he'd be utilized in the Texas defense.
"What stood out was when I was in the room with coach (Washington)," Jamison said. "He was telling me how I fit their defense and stuff, showing me the schemes that they play.
"I felt like it's a great fit. Seeing how their depth chart is, it's one of the things that stood out. That was one of the things I really liked about the trip."
The 5-10, 174-pound Jamison was told by Washington that if he winds up at Texas and puts in the work, he'd have an opportunity to be a four-year starter in the Longhorns' defensive backfield.
Up next, Jamison will pare down his list to five schools this week. Texas will make the cut, Jamison said.
"I should be announcing my top five on Wednesday," Jamison said. "Texas will definitely be in my top two."
Along with the Longhorns, Jamison said TCU is the other school filling out his top two. The other schools that will make up his top five are currently chasing the Longhorns and the Horned Frogs. Jamison does not have any other visits planned for this spring. The four-star prospect wants to major in photography or broadcast journalism, and said Texas offers strong academic programs in both area.
"Texas, it seems like a great fit for me. Academic wise, they also fit my major. They also made it seem like it's home," Jamison said.
During the visit, the Texas coaches stressed to Jamison that they'd like to have him in Austin, but Jamison said there wasn't a huge push for him to commit while on campus.
"They were just saying take it slow. There are still my options out there, but Texas would be a great fit for me," Jamison said.
