Embarrassing OOC Schedule, Baylor

Don't worry - you'll get your chance! And if this offends you, wait until you see Mary Hardin Baylor and Incarnate Word the next couple of years.

Wussiness does offend me, yes. But if Baylor wants to lose another tiebreaker getting into the playoffs, more power to you. Probably the best way to go about it.

Meh. Clearly the conference thinks it's a problem. They've told the schools that they have to schedule at least 1 power 5 team a season (though I don't know when it goes into effect or how it works with regard to previously scheduled games). I really do think that Baylor would have been into the playoffs the year before if they'd played Minnesota or Arizona or NC State or whoever. Someone decent but manageable and the Bears would have played in the first college football playoff instead of the eventual national champs. And it affects other Big 12 SOS's too. It's pretty shortsighted. But at least it's one place where Bowlsby has decided to do something to help the conference, even if the power conference opponent rule should have been introduced with more urgency.

I agree with most sentiments on here, except screw the guy that said Rapelor. There was a time in the not too distant past when the 3 OOC games were the only ones where BU had a chance. Not so today -- time to step it up. FWIW - BU is working on a home and home with Duke, and a series with Ole Miss in Houston.

So, you support rape?

So far they have a 2017-2018 series with Duke (which had been there for a bit) and a 2023-2024 series with Utah (which was announced around the time Bowlsby announced the power conference opponent requirement, I believe). All the seasons after the Duke series have an empty slot, at least based on what has been announced, so they have the space for a better game.

Personally, if I were a Baylor fan i'd want to get some big name teams in the mix. You have this brand new stadium that people can boat up to. You're trying to establish that you have staying power and deserve respect. Why not invite Ohio State (who beat you guys out for the playoffs) or Clemson or Oregon to town? Not every year. And I mean, I'm not saying you have to do a Texas-style schedule with 2 power 5 teams (though if you wanted to, I'd be impressed). But once in a while...? Why not?

I think Utah is a pretty solid series... but Duke is only good because they've had some of their best seasons ever recently (though, I guess the same can be said for Baylor)... and then it's just cupcakes.

On a side note, it would actually be kind of smart for Big 12 teams to schedule fewer of the same OOC opponents for SOS statistics I think. This isn't just a Baylor thing. Big 12 schools are going to play SMU and Rice and UTSA and Louisiana Tech and UTEP and Texas State in at least one of their games, and that's fine, but if SMU plays 3 or 4 Big 12 schools then that's an opponent that 3 or 4 of us beat up on and hurt the SOS for the conference in general. I think. I would need to see the math to be sure, but, at least at first glance, it seems like it'd be better to spread out those opponents to increase the possible wins and divide up opponents losses for SOS. Maybe.

Activists protest Baylor's response to sex accusations

About 200 people outside the Baylor University president Ken Starr’s home Monday night called for the school to handle campus rape cases better. Baylor has been rocked by complaints that it mishandled rape allegations, including two involving football players who were later convicted of sexual assault. According to a recent ESPN report, the university was slow to act against both players and failed to help the women.

You must be really disappointed to find out that the BU community isn't 100% in support of rape.

Read my post. "Screw the guy that said Rapelor." I feel even more comfortable with that statement now.

RAPE, RAPE, RAPE.
Baylor fans don't care as long as the football team is winning.

When the school's leaders take any real action will be a cold day in hell.

Never said it was. It's clear the athletic dept and university don't give two sh*ts about girls being raped as long as football is good though. How very ou of you bears.

200 people? WOW that is a whole 1% of the student body.

Guess the other 99% was busy raping or being raped.

My family back home wiho are season ticket holders and contribute to Baylor athletics said they are upset about the non con schedule and they said most Baylor fans are. And then just two years ago in face of the criticisms they were getting from their fans they defiantly schedule Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. They said that their ad is doing Art Briles bidding. Next year they will finally schedule a P5 school, Duke. Mostly they're hurting their credibility with the playoff committee. The Big XII already had two strikes against them with that bunch, and Baylor isn't helping themselves or the Big XII with this attitude.

As for the rape case this is what we know. The one who pis*** me off the most was this woman Bethany McGraw. She's involved with the athletic department and for a woman to encourage another woman not to press charges is inexcusable. Inspector Drebin from the Naked Gun movies could have handled this investigation better than the Waco police did. What should anger people the most was the jury. They gave SU a suspended sentence. The judge was angered and gave SU 6 months in jail which was all he could do aver the verdict. When all this is over Art Briles and the ad will survive with their jobs. They probably kept enough of a distance from all this. Somebody is going to fall on their sword.

I'd like to see the rule expanded to say you have to play a power 5 team to qualify for the playoff. For everyone. Its not an issue for most programs but is for others.

I'd love to see more definitive rules regarding who gets into the playoff and who doesn't, including what you're talking about. As it is, it's very vague and is subject to change if the committee thinks they made a mistake or a questionable decision year-to-year. They might not move the goal posts each year, but they certainly can if they feel like it and that's kind of dumb.

That said, do all of the Power 5 conferences currently have some kind of OOC schedule rule about playing a quality opponent? I'm pretty sure that the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and SEC all have those rules for themselves (though some are still being instituted). The only one I'm not 100% sure on is the Pac 12. Granted, some of these conferences have additional teams that count. Notre Dame is an obvious option and it makes sense that they count. BYU is a popular, if not universal, option and one I don't have much issue with. But I know that the SEC counts Army, which... if an SEC team schedules Army and a bunch of cupcakes... that's kind of bullshit (especially with 4 OOC dates instead of 3). I feel like I saw that either the ACC or Big 10 added some others to the list like Cincy or UConn or whatever, but I'm being too lazy to look it up right now. So... I mean, I guess it might be nice to help clean up the technical details, but some sort of rule exists within 4 or 5 of the power 5 conferences. And, while the "BCS Buster" type teams (I don't know what the new term would be yet) don't have such rules, it would be tricky to decide how they translate. I mean, most of the competitive C-USA and MWC teams play at least 1 power 5 team if not more, but far fewer games on their slate are against p-5 teams by nature of their conference.

Duke is a P5 school? Only if that stands for Powderpuff 5...maybe Baylor will shift focus and rape boys for a while...who knows? it could happen....

I guess "no means no" only when tough teams are trying to schedule Baylor OOC.

How nice of Art to invite that crooked-ass program into the middle of a major Texas talent hotbed for two years. Goddamn, what a dick move that is.
But its ok to invite Notre Dame to Austin? I'm kind of surprised -- I thought the spin on here would be that BU knows Ole Miss is going on probation, so BU purposefully scheduled the Rebels while they are down.

If the truth means anything, Baylor will also be on probation. We can call it the probation bowl.

Why wouldn't a home-and-home with Ole Miss work? It's the playing two years in Houston that seems ridiculous. I don't know when the series was scheduled, so I can't speculate on motives for scheduling them, but even a much-weakened Ole Miss is a vast improvement over all of Baylor's recent OOC opponents. My gripe is Baylor's decision to give Ole Miss the gratuitous advantage of playing both games in Texas (in Houston, no less).

Point taken, but maybe they won't come to Waco. I won't defend our schedule, but I'm sure you can appreciate that there not a whole lot of schools that are anxious to face that offense on the road.

And the NCAA rule that was broken was ....? Your hatred of BU is making you delirious.

lol. Don't flatter yourself. Baylor is a nobody, not worth hate. I hate Art Viles. When the truth comes out, if it ever does, there will be a shitstorm in Wacko. Just like SMU, when a little nobody school suddenly rises up, you can bet there's some dirty sh*t going on. Not just ignoring rape, either.

Btw, Ole Miss probably won't come to Waco because your stadium is too small to allow them enough seats. See, you think you've arrived, yet you're still lacking.

Very Aggie of you - Baylor wins so they must be cheating. That "nobody" has won 2 of the last 3 conference championships, and beaten UT 4 out of 6. Reading words like "Viles" leads me to the assumption that you still read Mad Magazine. Since I assume you are under 20, let me give you a little history lesson - BU under Teaff beat the Horns 10 times in 20 years. Before you go on your little rant about "selective history", understand that with the right coaches, Baylor will compete. And right now, that "nobody" is kicking longhorn a**. And the Longhorns, of which I am a freaking Fan, will start next year with Swoopes or Heard at QB.
