Football Pants

This may have been discussed before if so please forgive me.
I'm a old and played QB through high school. We always had knee pads in our pants. Why do all of these players have their pants above their knees with no protection?
I'm really curious as to why they don't protect their knees. I know they don't seem to get hurt by it. Can someone explain this to me.
