As a lifelong Democrat, I loved and respected Bush 41. He was courageous in his way. He raised taxes and risked his political future. He did the right thing. He got us on a path to fiscal responsibility. He managed the Iraq situation with absolute brilliance (I was in the Marines when that went down). He built a coalition. He managed the world stage masterfully.
I will admit, as one some would call a “librul”, I voted for HW in 1992. I never voted for Bill Clinton. To this day, he was a scumbag. Voted Perot in 1996.
I am sad today.the state of our politics is so disheartening. And we send off another of the class of politicians, who while politicians, every now and then did the right thing. BECAUSE, it was the right thing.
I can honestly say two of my favorite Presidents are Texans. LBJ, and GHWB. Why LBJ? He knew the Civil Rights Acts would cost his Presidency, and the Democrats lock on the South. But he did it because he believed in it.
I love this country. I was and still am willing to die for it. Although, probably not much use in the Marines for a 50 year old lawyer. But the path we are on is unsustainable. We need to come together.
We need guys — or gals — like 41. To me one of our Presidents. As a Marine, I knew he had my best interest at heart. Reminds of a quote about FDR.
So a man on the street during FDRs funeral precession was interviewed. He was distraught. A reporter asked him, “did you know him?”. He said “no, but he knew me.”
