I will be the first to say I wanted Cumbie on staff and as a longhorn. But the more I think about it, how many coaches out there come from the Briles coaching tree? Not many. And the few that are out there are hot commodities. Briles offensive system has reeked havoc on opposing defenses for several years now.

Gilbert might not have the recruiting resume that Cumbie had but he has one thing going for him, he was a past hs football coach in the great state of TX. Those ties run deep.

Don't let this dude leave without signing the dotted line.

I don't care who it is or what scheme or what coaching tree or if he's coming from college or HS or what, I just want 30 pts a game guaranteed. I was for giving Jeff Traylor a shot.

Now that Cumbie said no, I would like to interject that visors are still gay btw.

I would also like to add that if this pisses off the bald rape enabler in Waco, then even better.

I think we should interview Lincoln Riley, and moneywhip him away from okie before January.

I'm all for Traylor also. He intrigues me.

I didn't know he played for Lakeview.....We beat Lakeview my senior year 7-6....Kept a good team to 2 field goals..stopped them twice 1st and goal from inside the 5......many years ago and I still remember it.

I think this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I like his Offense better than TT's offense. I like that he has ACTUALLY CALLED plays and the power spread is my preferred offense.

I think Cumbie turning down the Texas job tells us a lot about him as a competitor. That he didn't want to be the MAN tells me a lot too. I do hope Gilbert is the man for the job and I hope he works out.

One thing that I think Gilbert has at his advantage is that at every stop he has been, he has taken kids who shouldn't have been great and made them really, really good. Going back to him as the LV head coach, took a team that went something like 1-29 in the 3 years previous to 6-6 with a playoff win in his first season. Then Temple starts making their playoff runs, the Eastern Illinois has a great two year run and their QB gets drafted by the Patriots to be Tom's heir, then they get Bowling Green to win the MAC, and then Tulsa this year. I think the track record is that he has done more with kids than some other coaches did. Just think what he could do with Texas recruits instead of Tulsa recruits.

The word is that Lincoln Riley is anxiously awaiting Strongs call. He wants to coach on the team that beat him this year. You might be better off hiring him to replace Charlie. He's a little reluctant to leave OU because it kind of worked out up there.
Money Whip now that's funny ask Cumbie about that.

Riley? Seroiusly, the guy is a good season away from getting good head coaching offers, why would he go to Texas to start something from scratch. You can offer him 3 million and he probably wouldn´t take it.

Now Gilbert is interesting. I wanted Cumbie but his lack of play calling experience was a big flag. My question is, is it possible that Cumbie said no because he wants to be OC and QB coach, and Strong doesn´t want to let Watson go? I heard that rumor a while ago.

As long as we get a good one, I am happy.

I like what Cumbie added more in the recruiting ranks. But Gilbert has the recent play calling duties on his resume. Both are from good coaching ilk and both run a style of offense that is the rave nowadays.

I kinda liked Gilbert more from the start (key reason is because I like the Briles offensive tree more than the TT/TCU tree), but he seems to me to be a bit more of an unknown commodity. Whereas Cumbie has the recent BigXII experience and we'd be weakening TCU a bit.

Either way if we get one of those two, I am happy. If not, they better find a good one. And I am not sure who that name would be.

My thoughts exactly. I would have been thrilled to get Cumbie, but all else being equal, I'd prefer a bit more of a run-heavy spread. Really hope we can reel Gilbert in.

Cumbie would be a nice hire, but the main advantage that I see over Gilbert is simply that it would have been a bit more of a splashy name (at least part of which is because of the publicity he's getting because Texas wants to hire him). That's not anything to blow off, clearly. A splashy name would definitely be valuable given the state of the program at the moment, but from what I can tell, experience-wise it is either a push or maybe in favor of Gilbert given play his play calling experience.

I am going to catch a lot of ridicule and abuse for asking this lol. But what is Gilbert's first name and where has he coached? After you get through laughing I would love to know.

And Imo Sonny Cumbie would be more from the Mike Leach coaching tree. SC played there and only started his senior season but led the nation in passing. That was when a TT qb led the nation in passing every year. And Briles was at Houston by the time SC finally played.

Another possible advantage would be to allow us to better poach some of TCU's commits, although that might cross some moral lines with him. Gilbert (apparently) has many ties to Texas high schools and is well considered among high school coaches. So from a recruiting perspective it might be a wash between these two candidates. Cu#bie seemed to have a couple staff positions lined up to fill with his cronies, and have an offensive staff on the same page to start would be an advantage. Hopefully it gets sorted soon, and better to take the time to get this one right, there's a lot riding on next season's outcome.

Need to get the staff in place to prevent recruiting defections; build some positive energy; lock down a solid 2016 class; and then perform some magic with x's and o's in the off season.

His name is Sterlin. I think both would be good hires. They both have similar risks as neither have been the main guy at this level.

Sterlin Gilbert – Co-offensive Coordinator/WR and QB coach – Tulsa

Bio: Gilbert is a former star quarterback at San Angelo State who cut his teeth in the Texas high school ranks at Abilene Cooper and Temple High School. Gilbert helped install offenses at Houston, Eastern Illinois, and Bowling Green. Gilbert developed Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into a pro prospect and Harlon Hill (FCS Heisman) winner at Eastern Illinois. A student of the Art Briles offense, Gilbert was hired by Phil Montgomery when he took the job at Tulsa. Gilbert has great ties to the state with experience installing offense from his time under Briles, Montgomery, and Dino Babers. He also has playcalling experience at both Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green.

For what it's worth, I DID actually go read about him back when his name started getting mentioned as the "non-Cumbie" option for OC. There are some people who know him because of his Briles and Texas High School connections, and plenty of people who probably weren't aware of him until his name started being mentioned... but let's be honest, there are a LOT of coordinators who are unknowns unless they coach for your team, a rivals' team, or are being tabbed to be a head coach soon. Doesn't mean you can't read up and be informed when a name starts popping up.

That article has a ton of wrong information. First it is Angelo State University. Secondly, the Harlon Hill award is the D2 equivalent of the Heisman. The FCS award which Garoppolo did win is called the Walter Payton Award. Lots of his QB's have been mediocre before him and setting records afterwards. Tulsa averages something like 500 yds per game this past year and 330 passing. I think his system would fit the current personnel of Texas with the emphasis on the run game. Hope the backs can catch the football. Heard would fit in really well in his system, I believe.

Cumbie is leach coaching tree and Gilbert is from Briles coaching tree.

Why don't we ever get creative?

I would make Traylor OC and let him put in his 2 back run spread offense and hire Grahm Harrell and let him put in some Mike Leach air raid concepts.
We would then have a hybrid offense no one has seen and we would kick ass.

Remember when DKR got creative and did something different. Not bad results.

Gilbert would be pretty creative by Texas standards. Whoever it is, their ability will decide Strong's fate. He won't get another do over. I doubt he's willing to risk that on Traylor and Graham Harrell.

I thought that was the knock on Gilbert as well. That Montgomery called his own plays, and Gilbert had other OC responsibilities.

Oh because he didn't want to be out of a job in a year, he's not a competitor? What other character defects can you read into it...guess Darrell Royal wasn't much of a competitor either by your logic

I think someone who has faith in themselves and wants to someday be a HC would jump at the chance to takeover playcalling at Texas......therefore I don't think he is all that competitive or he doesn't have much faith in himself........ How the hell do you know he would be out of a job in a year? How do you know he wasn't SCARED to see if he "had" it or not? How would he have been hurt if he was fired "with the staff" next year....3 year GUARANTEED contract..? How many years is he GUARANTEED at TCU? You are actually bitching about me making assumptions WHILE you are doing the same damn thing...just wow.....
