Give me a good reason for public display of Confederate statues

The following are true statements:
  • Confederates were traitors of the United States of America, by definition.
  • Confederates may have been heroes of the Confederate States of America, but this isn't that nation.
  • Confederates went to war for the express purpose of preserving and expanding human slavery, setting in motion the events that led to the deaths of 750 thousand to 1 million people.
  • Confederates were losers.
I'm going to insist on a good reason, so variations on "you can't whitewash history" don't fly. Nobody needs a statue of Hitler to study his historical significance.
