Here are the highlights of Texas football coach Tom Herman’s press conference on Tuesday:
- Herman said his team practiced well during a short week and took the pads off on Tuesday. Herman said the team has practiced hard all year and earned the lighter practice. In addition, Herman said, “There is no fear of us losing our physicality.”
- Linebacker Gary Johnson and defensive lineman Jamari Chisholm missed Monday’s practice due to class obligations, but Herman believes both players are caught up.
- Herman said seniors Naashon Hughes and Poona Ford meant the world to him this year. Both players were noticeably excited in the locker room about Texas becoming bowl eligible after Saturday’s win against West Virginia: “When you have a senior class that for the most part buys in early and leads the way, that’s unique.”
- Herman on the importance of fear as a motivator: “I think it’s important. I’ve said the two greatest motivating factors in life are love and fear. To me, love wins every time, but I think when there is a healthy fear of failure, that can motivate you. I think the fear of failure needs to manifest itself in preparation and not in the execution. You’ve got to prepare so hard because you are fearful of failure. Then when it comes to kickoff, you have to be confident in your preparation so that you feel like failure is not an option.”
- Herman said defensive back Kobe Boyce has given the offense one heck of a look this year. Defensive back Montrell Estell has, too, while linebacker Marquez Bimage (non-redshirt player) has caught Herman’s eye on the scout team. Tight end Reese Leitao and offensive lineman Sam Cosmi are guys Herman believes will have bright futures at Texas. In addition, Herman said the scout team guys have an extra lift every week and more time to devote toward their physical development. As a result, Cosmi has gained 20 pounds since stepping on campus.
- Herman enjoys the sideline enthusiasm from his reserve players during kickoffs. The players have simulated a bench press and performed the Rockettes dance against West Virginia.
- Herman on how Terrell Cuney graded out at guard against West Virginia: “Good … There’s not much difference, other than the ball between your legs, between guard and center. I think a lot of the job description is similar. When you start playing an odd-front with zero-nose, I think that becomes a little bit different when you got a guy that's over the top of you all game long at center. I think most of those guys are interchangeable. If you think about it, Zach (Shackelford), Jack (McMillon) and Terrell have all played guard an center in their careers. They’re pretty interchangeable.”
- Herman said Texas Tech will mostly run a three-man front. However, Texas Tech’s coverage is much different than West Virginia’s because "the three-three stack is its own animal." Herman said Texas Tech’s coverages are different than what they are used to, but instead of using a fifth defensive back, the Red Raiders will play with a true linebacker.
