What you missed: Texas survives in their first true road game of the season in Raleigh (NC) against the NC State Wolfpack 63-59

The participants: Texas Longhorns @ NC State Wolfpack

Hardwood MVP: In their first true road game of the season Texas traveled to Raleigh to take on the NC State Wolfpack and they answered the call. I had a very difficult time just singling out one guy for this award so figured the MVPs of tonight were between Tre Johnson, Arthur Kaluma, and Jordan Pope who stepped up in deciding moments in the contest. With Tre Johnson in foul trouble tonight was a good look into the future as to who would step up to the plate when needed and Pope (13pts, 3/5 3FG, 68.9 TS%, +10), and Kaluma (8pts, 16reb, 2stl, +6) showed why they were such key additions in the portal.

We need to start a dialogue: I understand everybody and their mom is raving about true Freshman Tre Johnson, and to those who have yet to understand just what the Freshman from Garland (TX) is doing exactly, not only is he on pace to finish top 3 in total points in a season in school history, he is currently playing better against higher competition, here are Tre Johnson’s stats against High Major schools this season (3 games):

21.0 PPG

43.4% 3FG

54.1 TS%

They’re finally starting to click: In their season opener outside of Tre Johnson the Longhorns shot a combined 15/48 31% and 2/18 from three-point land. Tonight, while we kept saying to lookout for this team to start clicking on multiple areas as the season progressed, they started to get it going as a collective offensively. Players like Jordan Pope, Arthur Kaluma, and Tramon Mark to me had their best game offensively together as one. Posting a combined 31 points, 42.8% from the field (12/28), 4 steals, and 44% from beyond the arc moments like these is where I can’t help but think Texas is bound to make a decent run in the NCAA Tournament.

Making life a living hell….for yourself:
Entering tonight Texas was ranked 12th amongst High major schools in opponent effective FG% 42.6 17TH in the entire nation in that same department however tonight the story NC State shot 44.2% from the field one of the most Texas has allowed this season and while Texas has shown a strength in contesting shots on the defensive end for the most part this season, they seem to be taking too many contested ones for themselves, entering this game Texas posted .498 assists/FGM ranking 220th in the entire country and the story on that end was a broken record only recording 11 assists which is above their average but not where it should be with the amount of talent on this team, it’ll be interesting to see how they compare against the defending champions, the UCONN Huskies and conference play as well, where the SEC is leading the SEC/ACC challenge by a wide margin.

Studying for the next test: Tonight was Texas’ first true road game this season against the Wolfpack, and although we did get some questions asked during the past couple games, against teams like Syracuse, Ohio State, and St. Joeseph, the UCONN Huskies will be waiting for the Horns in the Moody Center. Some quick takeaways, UCONN haven’t been as disciplined as years past ranking 295th in the nation in FTM a game and 311th in FTA a game knowing these two stats it will be important to see how Texas tests their discipline alongside being at home in which should be a hostile environment for the Huskies.

Chasing the sniper: As of right now Tre Johnson is on par with the likes of KD for points in a season. As of right now, here are their point totals through their first 8 games:

Tre Johnson: 166

Kevin Durant: 173
