I have been thinking about how Texas has been lackluster in football since the restriction of scholarships happened. Title IX happened in 1972 and we were able to eeek out that decade with some good ball. In the 80's particularly after '83 it's been downhill for us save Mack's run. In reality, Texas should be in the mix for the national title every 3 out of 4 years given the access to talent and money that the program generates. Clearly, we are not in the mix and are rarely. I have some ideas why this is and it brakes down to 2 types of philosophies concerning the operation of a program in relation to the NCAA.
1. This program plays by the rules for the most part but struggles with results. This is where we get the rotating carousel of coaches every 3-4 years. These schools expect a miracle out of the coaching staff and when results are not delivered, out they go. The result of this is the decimation of recruiting and a boatload of transfers when the new staff comes in, otherwise known as a complete rebuild. This does not always happen but it is not the exception. It is the norm.
2. This program does not play by the rules for the most part. They hire coaches with reasonable skills and management ability and pay players like there is no tomorrow. The hallmark of these institutions are their relatively small available recruiting bases but not always, sometimes they have somewhat fertile states, see tosu, penn state, etc... They have the philosophy of always paying no matter what. They know that when they get caught that they will be faced with a total rebuild but as long as they are paying, they will ascend quickly.
The teams that come to mind. Bama, Auburn, Miami, OU, tOSU, both Mississippi's, LSU, USC, A&M-SMU-TCU in the 80's. In reality OU and Bama are Arkansas but since they pay and skirt all ethics issues, they win.
When and if Texas wises up or we go straight pay to play, look out because Texas will dominate.
Quick thought: We may have been in the mix during Mack's run and if Mack returns as the AD this would fit nicely with the BMD's wanting TH and putting the agreements in place to rock n roll. If you think aggy doesn't do this, then you're crazy. They are just bad at it.
