Here are a few quick thoughts and takeaways from Tom Herman's pre-Iowa State presser on the heels of a home win versus Kansas State:
Slick, black athletic jacket for Herman in this one. I wonder if it's available at the Co-op, I'm sure it would be a good seller.
Injury updates: Junior Angilau - MCL; week-to-week. Best case scenario is the week after Iowa State but Herman didn't seem thrilled. Collin Johnson - tweaked a hamstring but will be treated "aggressively over the next couple of days." Chris Brown - "surprisingly good news" he was cleared on Friday to play with a cast on, he was an emergency option versus K-State. Jeffrey McCulloch - progressing "better" this week. Demarvion Overshown is cleared but still dealing with pain issues. It sounds about the same with Jordan Whittington who has been cleared but who they need to continue to "work him through some soreness."
Bob Ballou asked Herman about not scoring a TD in the first quarter of in 4-of-6 conference games and if Herman had thought about the slow starts.
- Herman said he hadn't thought about it, but did mention the team had "won 4 of those conference games, two of them, TCU and K-State, two of, if not the two best defenses in our conference," per Herman.
Wait, Texas beat TCU?
"Absolutely huge"
- Herman's comment on the confidence the defense can take away from this game. "The calls were all the same, I think our guys settled down." This is not true, Texas did some things defensively versus K-State personnel-wise that it hasn't done all season like using 4 down linemen on significant snaps.
The next question was, ironically, about why Texas didn't go with four-down linemen from Brian Davis.
- On the week they actually used four down with some frequency! Davis asked if this was to make a statement to the fans and media who are calling for more four down. Herman, of course, said they don't make decisions based on fan and media feedback, but did go on to say that they had run four-down before and doing so was nothing new. Basically, the communication between these two made little sense as Herman seemed to not even understand what Davis was asking. I think he thought Davis was asking if the fan outcry was the reason they did do this where it seemed like Davis was actually asking why they didn't. More cockamamie interactions with AAS staff. Rinse, repeat. I like those guys, don't get me wrong -- I just think Herman hates a lot of their questions.
Joe Cook asked about the 4WR sets including Malcolm Epps.
- "I think you'll see that more often moving forward," Herman said.
Thank God, after 2.5 years of screaming for this -- finally some true 4-wide sets, although Herman admitted that it was due mostly to Cade Brewer being out. Herman mentioned that in that personnel grouping, it gives Collin Johnson the opportunity to play out of the slot which is obviously a mismatch issue for opponents. They should have thought about this earlier. It's about damn time.
Ced Golden asked about "misinformation" in the media that Herman mentioned post-game.
- "It was to let our fans know what to believe and what not to believe ... if you want proof of how this team is doing, watch the games ... Hopefully our fans can be cautious with what they choose to believe." Sounds like he's cooled off since then because he seemed to want to expound on it and possibly go off on some kind of report after the game if anyone had followed up on the comment at that time.
Anwar asked about the right side of the offensive line after the injury to Angilau and what he saw in the game.
"Serviceable ... we only had one OL grade out at championship level, Zach Shackelford." Interesting, we'll see how my grades come out. Maybe they are suppressing Cosmi's grades down the stretch to make him think he is better off coming back to school than going pro. (I do think personally he should probably come back based on my work on him through his time at Texas in order to maximize his draft ceiling, but we will see).
Herman did his homework before Ed Clements did his trick-play question bit this week.
"You know we did run a fake punt versus TCU, right?" That was the play he could not remember last week when challenged about no trick plays recently.
"You don't ever alter your gameplan or think of the impact of temperature."
- Herman said the cold doesn't affect anything you do in football like the wind, rain, etc. So, the staff isn't worried about preparing for a cold one in Ames, especially given temps here in Austin will be icy this week. Tell that to the Buffalo Bills coaching staffs of the last 30 years, who've had to grind out run-heavy games in the snow a few times a year.
"Difficult."
- Herman's evaluation of the matchup with Iowa State TE Charlie Kolar. I can't find any of his highlights from this season online, but I see he did play basketball in high school. You know what that means ... Did you know Antonio Gates and Tony Gonazlez played basketball, too?
