Had a chance to talk to some people who have been observing Garrett Gilbert this summer, and they said Gilbert does not expect to simply be awarded the starting job in fall camp. He knows he has to earn it. That's a significant factor to consider when talking about Gilbert. The guy has won big in high school and was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year before enrolling at Texas.

It would be easy for Gilbert to think because he has the starting experience of one season under his belt that he's the man. But he definitely felt the sting of 5-7. He knows he contributed to it. And he knows he has to come out with a new attitude. All of those things are positive. He had one of his best workouts earlier this week.

Texas is not bringing a quarterback to Big 12 Media Days in Dallas next Monday and Tuesday. The coaches truly want that position to be a battle throughout camp and don't want to bring GIlbert and give the appearance that he's already been annointed the guy. He will have to earn it.

Ideally, Gilbert or whomever wins the job at QB needs to do it quickly. There's only so many practices Texas can go while giving four guys an equal number of reps at QB. The coaches gave the QBs the summer to learn and perfect the offense as much as possible. The coaches will make a decision quickly about who the top two QBs are to give those two the most reps and then will let those two battle it out the rest of camp. (Brown)

How about an update on the offensive line and one on the defensive line?

On the offensive line, I got a good critique of Paden Kelley from a former NFL player close to the Texas program.

"Kelley is probably more comfortable at left tackle because that's where he played in high school," the former NFL player said. "He's up to 305 pounds. So he's now got the size to compete at tackle. He may not always have the best technique or pad level. But he will fight you. And that's what Texas has been missing. They just need guys who will get out there and scratch and claw on the O-line like Kasey Studdard used to. Kelley should just keep getting better and better at right tackle."

What about Trey Hopkins?

"Trey is a guard physically. His body says guard. But in college you have to play your best players on the line out there on the island (tackle). And I think what's most impressive about Trey is his mind. As great as his feet are, his punch and his attention to detail on technique - he has a really sharp mind and he anticipates things. I think Trey Hopkins is going to be a star. Kind of reminds me of Justin Blalock. Just solid and smart wherever you put him."

If we're being brutally honest here (and please don't carry this out of the War Room), there was some criticism as well.

On Tray Allen after his foot surgery :

"Just hope Tray cuts it loose in fall camp, because he didn't seem to do that in the spring," the source said. "If they put him at left tackle to start the season based on what I saw in the spring, that would be a huge mistake. I'm not even sure he'd be the best player at left or right guard, either."

On David Snow ...

"David's body is NFL ready right now. But he's got to show he can anticipate some things at center. You can get away with a smaller guy at center as long as he uses every bit of leverage, talent and technique that he has," the former NFL player said. "David doesn't always use everything he's got, and for being such a big, strong, talented guy, I'm sure that frustrates the coaches some because he's such a talent physically. Hopefully, Stacy Searels can get everything out of David. If not, the coaches might need to start looking at a Garrett Porter or Dominic Espinosa to rotate in there."

On Mason Walters ...

"Mason will get after people, and that's what you need. Is he as gifted physically as he was before the (foot) surgery? I'm not sure. But you can win with Mason Walters as your right guard."

(Sorry, that's all I had time for in our O-line recap interview. Will try to get more for next week.

But a couple more sources who have been watching or receiving stuff at summer workouts say Keenan Robinson is just killin it on the field and off the field (in the weight room). He is the leader of the defense. Jordan Hicks is also a name that keeps popping up as having a great summer along with Demarco Cobbs. The LB corps is alive and well.

And as previously stated, there are a couple people close to the program who are really impressed with the work DT Calvin Howell is putting in and think he'll emerge as a starter. (Brown)

We caught up with the father of 5-star DE Noah Spence on Thursday night to get an update.

As a refresher, when we last talked to Mr. Spence earlier in the summer, his family had taken a step away from the recruiting process so Noah could enjoy a relatively quiet summer.

Mr. Spence told us things are still relatively quiet at this point, but things will heat up pretty soon. Noah, out of Harrisburg (Pa.) Biship McDevitt, is going to narrow down his options in early August and begin focusing in on the programs to which he'll likely take his official visits in the fall.

As for Texas, things have been extremely quiet ever since UT reached out to Spence and his coach during the spring evaluation period. As such, the Longhorns have fallen down Spence's list. But all is not lost, should Texas decide to get back into the race.

Mr. Spence indicated that Noah has four schools in mind for official visits, but he still has one spot that he's trying to fill. If Texas is to draw consideration for Spence's fifth official visit, and it's not completely out of the question, the Longhorns would need to join Spence's lengthy list of offers, or at the very least assure the family that an offer would be officially presented during Noah's visit. As Mr. Spence said, they only want to take official visits to schools that they know are legitimate options.

"Things have been quiet with Texas since that time we first talked to them. But if they offered, I do believe Noah would have taken a trip there.

"Texas is a great program. My son, his coach and myself are honored just to be called upon by Texas." (Suchomel)

Speaking of DEs, Longhorn commitment Hassan Ridgeway is currently in Williamsburg, Va. participating in the FBU Top Gun Camp.

Ridgeway, a Rivals100 member out of Mansfield, told a couple Rivals.com reporters covering the camp that a number of other schools are still actively recruiting him, trying to get him to take a visit in the fall.

Ridgeway has always maintained that he's solid with his UT commitment and we still believe that to be the case, but there is some chatter coming out of the FBU camp that he may be privately keeping the door opened just a crack as other schools continue to reach out to him.

No need to get worked up on this one at this point, but we'll keep our ears open and let you all know if anything newsworthy happens. (Suchomel)

Sunday was an eventful day, with some fans going off the deep end when it was learned that Cayleb Jones was on A&M's campus during the Aggies' one-day camp.

In case you missed it, Jones posted on twitter that he was only there watching his younger brother, Isaiah Jones, work out. We talked to Jones this week and he seemed genuinely surprised by some of the hand-wringing that was going on with Longhorn nation.

There's been some talk that Jones' visit was more than it appears on the surface, but most of that information is coming from people who are viewing things and leaking information from an A&M perspective. Jones himself was adamant that he has no interest in opening up his recruitment and he's 100 percent solid to Texas.

On the surface, any potential interest in A&M wouldn't seem to add up. Jones is a local guy, he's been arguably UT's most active recruiter of the 2011 class, he's been a huge Longhorn fan since long before he committed and he's never given a single inclination previously that he wanted to consider other options. Again, the pieces on Jones opening up his recruitment to A&M just don't seem to fit, and if you're taking Jones at his word (both on the record and off), Texas has nothing to worry about.

Of note, Jones will be surrounded by a number of UT and A&M commitments at next week's Gridiron Kings ... will more rumors pop up or will he continue to emphatically shut them down?

You never want to say never in recruiting because there are so many factors that can change over the course of a prospect's recruitment, but barring something completely unexpected this one still looks like it's all Texas. (Suchomel)

Celina's Jake Raulerson continues to be one of the state's hottest prospects, with the 2013 DE/OT picking up an offer from Alabama on Thursday.

Raulerson told us last week that he'll likely narrow his focus down to about five following his upcoming season, and he listed Texas, Florida and Alabama as schools that will probably make the cut.

We continue to hear that UT and Florida may be the early teams to beat for the blue-chip prospect. Keep an eye on Raulerson's brother, Josh, also a member of the 2013 class. If Josh were to earn a scholarship from a school that he likes within the state, or even the Central Texas area, that could really shift the scales in UT's favor. (Suchomel)

With Rockdale athlete Daniel Brooks set to make the move to Port Lavaca Calhoun, fans have wondered if Texas will gain a bit of an advantage on Oklahoma since Austin is much closer to Port Lavaca than is Norman.

I asked Brooks about that at last week's Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament.

“I want to be close to my family, but I want to go where I can benefit, where I’m comfortable. I’m not going to go just by location. I’m going to go where the coaches are good, the teams are good, where they’re winning, where I can start and play and perform to the best of my ability,” Brooks said.

The versatile playmaker and OU commit did say he's pretty much down to the Sooners and the Longhorns, but it's too early to tell just which way this one will wind up going. As for what Brooks likes in Texas?

“It’s Texas. That’s all you can really say. They’re known for winning. They have great coaching," he said. "If you go to UT, most likely you’re going to have a chance to go to the next level after that. It’s a prestigious school, one of the best schools out there. And it’s in Texas, my home state.” (Suchomel)

HOOPS

We’ll start with the name I think Longhorn fans need to get extremely familiar with - Prince Ibeh (2012). The super athletic, 6-10 big man from Naaman Forest HS in Garland is another big man that is watching his stock take off. There has been some buzz that the Longhorns are showing a ton of attention to the 230 pounder, and his coach confirmed that tonight.

“Texas is up there,” stated Top Achievers Pistons AAU coach Lawrence Mann. “They’re showing him they really, really want him. That means a lot. They’re saying he’s a priority.”

Right now Ibeh, Mann, and their team are getting prepared for the big AAU tournament in Las Vegas. The schools currently on him the hardest are Texas, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Duke (called yesterday but hasn’t offered), Syracuse, Texas A&M, and Kansas. Ibeh has visited Texas and Maryland unofficially and will visit the new Texas A&M coaching staff in August. According to coach Mann, the Longhorn staff, mainly lead recruiter Chris Ogden, has been on him hard for a long time and Mark Turgeon has as well. Also, according to Mann the list will be trimmed soon.

“He’d like to do it before the basketball high school season,” stated Ibeh’s AAU coach about his commitment plans. “That’s our goal.”

Immediately after mentioning that Mann again brought up how much Texas is on him. I got the impression the Horns were sitting near the top of the list, if not on top of it. It should come as no surprise that Rick Barnes likes this talented big, who Mann says runs the floor like a wing, because he’s a tremendous shot blocker. College assistants have told Mann that Ibeh can make a significant impact defensively the moment he comes on campus, and he’s developing a strong, inside-outside game.

Keep an eye on this one when the summer period ends. After this conversation, I’d be shocked if Texas didn’t get an official and wasn’t in the top group for his services.

******

Another 2012 big man that can claim his stock is exploding as well is San Antonio Churchill HS forward Connor Lammert. Despite being just 16 years old right now (Connor told me he turns 17 in August), his advanced offensive skills and excellent touch from the outside have caught the attention of a lot of schools.

Texas Tech, SMU, TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma State offered,” said the 6’9 left-hander. “I’ve been talking to UT a lot and Texas A&M a lot. Coach (Chris) Ogden has been mainly talking to me. Coach (Rob) Lanier was at the last tournament I was at in Houston and coach Barnes has been mailing me some hand written letters. All the schools that have offered me are great schools. I’m going to take some visits after the summer tournaments. I’m planning on visiting Baylor, Tech, SMU, and TCU.”

As pointed out, Lammert is very young for his class, is still growing, and is still developing. He’ll be a guy that Texas keeps a close eye on, probably gets on campus a few times, and is probably one of those second or third tier types of offers. It didn’t sound like he’d be making a decision any time soon and said all of his options were open.

******

Round Rock Stony Point is home to one of the top 2013 bigs in the Lone Star State. Dominic Woodson has been turning some heads during the summer circuit, and the offers are starting to roll in. TCU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, and James Madison have offered the 6’10, 255 pounder. However, there are a couple of schools showing him a lot of love and that are standing out.

“Coach Ogden,” responded Woodson when asked who the coach he communicates with the most was. “He told me that he’s very interested in me. He likes what he sees in my game. He said I’m a good low post. Texas is the one that’s standing out the most along with OU.”

Woodson, who plays his AAU basketball for Ray Jackson’s Rising Stars, is receiving a lot of significant interest from the Longhorns, and if that UT offer ever comes, you’d have to think the Horns would be at the top of his list.

******

Just passing this along because it comes from a good source, but Texas could be slowing down its recruitment of 2012 Westbury Christian PG L.J. Rose. This is the first time I’ve ever heard that mentioned, but I wouldn’t have brought it up if it didn’t come from someone I trust. The keyword is obviously “slowing” because the Horns have clearly put some time into his recruitment, but this could be an instance of Texas wanting to see some other guys at the guard position before making any final pushes. Again, it’s the first I’ve heard of it but wanted to keep you guys in the loop.

******

Texas is in the mix for two, 2012, Rivals100 members from the Georgia Stars AAU team. Recently, the Horns extended an offer to 6’5, 210 pound guard/forward Marcus Hunt (No. 91 overall) and the Longhorns are on the list for 6’8, 215 pounder Alex Poythress (No. 38 overall). From talking to Georgia Stars coach Norm Parker tonight I got the impression this duo really hasn’t sat down and spent time with the recruiting process. Hunt’s stock is taking off as the offers pour in to over 20, and Poythress has been a guy that everyone in the country has pretty much offered. Parker indicated that they’ll both have to sit down and narrow their list once the summer period ends. They both feel like southeastern prospects, but Texas has thrown its hat into the ring.
