Cliff-notes: The Longhorns picked up commitment No.5 for the 2020 class on Saturday when Port Neches-Grove offensive lineman Jaylen Garth committed to Tom Herman and his staff.
Rankings: Garth is currently rated as the No.62 overall prospect in Texas in the current Rivals Texas Top 100 and the No.35 overall prospect in the newest Lone Star Recruiting Top 100.
Key Offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Houston, Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Utah
Evaluation: It's easy to see why schools all over the country are so excited about Garth because he looks like a kid with a ton of untapped potential. Listed at 6-4, 275 pounds, thrives when he's allowed to get downhill in the running game because of his physicality and ability to knock opponents off of their feet. Shows quickness in getting to the second level of the defense and most importantly, actually doing something once he gets there. Plays all the way through the whistle. As you'd expect from a kid that's just old enough to drive, Garth needs some time to continue his physical development, but his frame looks like an almost perfect mold of clay for a college strength and conditioning coach to work with. I'm a little torn on whether I think his best position is inside or outside, as there are times when he flashes the footwork, slide-step and balance that gives you hope that he could be a starting right tackle, but there are other times when I think he's best-suited to use his power on the inside. The bottom line is that he'll arrive in Austin with some possible versatility to his game and projects as a possible multi-year starter.
UT player he reminds me of: Denzel Okafor
Why it matters: Offensive linemen with his skill set and raw upside are worth their weight in gold. It's hard to believe he won't eventually rank as one of the nation's top 250 prospects. It also represents a major head to head win over Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies. With this pledge, the Longhorns now have three four-star level offensive linemen in the 2020 class, which could shape up to be a top five national group when the dust clears on Signing Day.
