Cliffs Notes: The Longhorns might have put a ribbon and bow on 2025 running back recruiting on Wednesday with the commitment of Shreveport (La) Calvary Academy's James Simon.

Rankings: Here's the industry breakdown...

Rivals: (5.8) Low 4 star, NR nationally, No.7 in Louisiana
ESPN: (80) Low 4 star, No.279 nationally, No.6 in Louisiana
On3: (92) Low 4 star, No.116 nationally, No.4 in Louisiana
247: (91) Low 4 star, No.163 nationally, No.4 in Louisiana
247 composite: (.9259) Low 4 star, No.200 nationally, No.4 in Louisiana

Notable offers: Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee and USC

Evaluation: In an era where it seems like every single high school running back lives to take everything to the outside as a test of their speed, Simon is a throw back to a different kind of back, as he makes his living between the hash marks and stands out for different reasons as a player/prospect. At 6-0, 200 pounds, Simon is a patient runner with good vision and cut back ability, who seems to maneuver his way through runner and defenses with his brain as much as his raw athletic tools. Simon is great in a phone booth and makes guys miss at will at his current level. He's not a guy that is going to wow you with explosiveness, but great feet, vision and a feel for the game can take a running back a long way.

Why it matters: Joins Rickey Stewart Jr. as one of two running backs in this class for the Longhorns, which might mean that the running back position is taken care of for the 2025 recruiting year. As one of the top 4-7 overall prospects in the state of Louisiana, it's a commitment that allows the Longhorns to add a little more strength to its position as a growing factor in The Boot.

Expectations: With at least four of the five running backs on the current roster scheduled to return in 2025, it's likely that neither of the running backs in this 2025 recruiting class will be in a position to come in and make an immediate impact. The smart money would likely have Simon and Stewart Jr. both waiting until Jaydon Blue and C.J. Baxter are out of the picture and then competing with the likes of Tre Wisner, Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson for the rights to be the headlining back in 2026.

Must See Junior Film: Enjoy.
