Texas Men's basketball Team: "No one can blow a double-digit lead like we can."
Texas football team: "Hold my beer."
In what can only be described as a game that Texas so dearly didn't want to win that it did everything it could to lose it, the Longhorns accomplished what they appeared to covet - they didn't win.
Stunning. Devastating. Stupid.
So many words would describe what happened to the Longhorns on Friday night, but the biggest thing to take note is just when you started to believe that the Longhorns had crossed some sort of barrier, the reality of just how many true barriers remain to be crossed was revealed.
This wasn't an accident. The better team won. The team with the more complete performance in all three phases won the game.
This isn't just a setback, this will be the lasting memory for many when they think of an initial season under Tom Herman that ultimately has fallen short of anything anyone could reasonable claim as a success.
Tonight sealed that. If you want positive thoughts, tonight probably isn't the night to look for it.
Hello, 6-6. You're every bit as empty in person as you appeared to look on paper.
(Other thoughts on the game)
* Sam Ehlinger just wasn't good enough. Period. For the third time this season, Ehlinger turned the ball over in a way that proved directly responsible for a loss. The interception he threw across his body in the middle of the field was another one of those throws that you just can't make, especially given the circumstances. While Ehlinger made some nice plays, the overall body of work in four quarters was not good enough.
* The play-calling tonight was just brutal. I don't know what Tim Beck and Co. were trying to accomplish, but it seemed like after the first series of the game when the Longhorns opened the night with a reverse-pass to the quarterback, there was no direction at all.
Of course, the offensive line lost the battle at the point of attack, didn't have anyone other than Armanti Foreman that wanted to make a play and was a shell of the unit that established a ton last week against West Virginia.
* Defensively, Texas let too many plays get away from it. There were at least three dropped interceptions and to see DeShon Elliott slip and fall in front of the receiver in the end zone on the game-winning play was hard to watch. The Texas defense got what it deserved.
* Texas is lucky that Nic Shimonek didn't play the entire game or it probably loses this game by double-digits.
* Malcolm Roach should have been called targeting at the end of the game. I'm shocked that wasn't called.
* Kris Boyd was really good tonight. That's what he's capable of doing. Texas needed more Kris Boyds and less of what it received.
* A little part of Tom Herman's soul died when he accepted that Texas needed to take the three points from the three-yard line in the second quarter.
* Texas in the red zone is painful in every way possible.
* I think we can dismiss the idea that Connor Williams' presence on the field would have changed much this season. Last week was a mirage.
* Michael Dickson was sensational. I've never seen a better college punter.
* Gary Johnson's speed and athleticism is absolutely game-changing. He's going to be a monster in 2018.
* Armanti Foreman was the best offensive player on the field tonight and the Longhorns could not get him the ball consistently. I guess it'sa good thing that he had a good week of practice or he wouldn't have played at all.
* This season is a failure. That's what the loss tonight means.
