Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Is history repeating?)

Ketch, ya need to get ya boy on the show

Man, he looks OLD. Being an Aggie full time is aging him quickly.

@Ketchum I have to agree to strongly disagree on the signing the HS kicker thing. All your points are duly noted and can’t disagree with your numbers. The issue is that kickers can and do get hurt. This is not the NFL where you hold a try out and just sign some guy off the street. And what happens if a guy truly regresses like Burt Auburn did in 2024 or just gets in a funk. You’ve got to have some depth from somewhere. This is a position where the SEC scholarship limits are really complicating optimal roster management versus other conferences. I strongly approve of what we did in the portal but you also need some backups.
YOur walk-on program should cover your kicking issues as far as depth goes.

I’m not in the weeds on the changing landscape of football, but I thought you couldn’t do walk ons any more. That’s exactly my point. 85 scholarships and no walk ons makes this issue all the more complicated. 105 scholarships, it’s easy. You get 1 alpha of each in the portal and have HS and JUCO/D2 compete for the backups. In the old days, you always had 3 walk on kickers and it didn’t matter.

Most of the kickers you listed were walkons, I'm pretty pretty sure.

I can tell you how to tell the difference. Look at when they announce the offer.

It's just that Ewers was so consistently poor for long stretches. Barring truly Disaster levels of play akin at Chris Simms at his worst, I don't know how Arc h could be worse. The worst thing that could happen is that Texas wouldn't score many points in big games, which is what Quinn did.
I get it and I saw the same ugly stretches that you did. But it seems like you only ask half the question, the other being, would Arch have met QE's highs? Would Arch have dissected Michigan the same way? Or Bama the year before? Or OK State in the B12 championship? He was great in those games. Freshman or sophomore Arch may have been able to win those games because the Texas D was suffocating opposing offenses, but I think it's a disservice to Quinn to gloss over those performances.

His career was a mixed bag for sure. Again, I'm just making a distinction between what we know and what is unadulterated speculation.

Quinn brought us out of the darkness, so I will admit I have a soft spot for him. Nevertheless, I am being objective on this subject. Arch could win the Heisman and lead us to a natty next year, but it doesn't mean he would have done better than Quinn in 2024. I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

You have 105 slots. Right now, only 85 of those are scholarships at Texas.

What Quinn highs outside of Michigan? You're asking about 2023 games and I'm only talking about 2024.

That doesn't sound right, but will trust you. :)

I mean... you can feel free to tell me even one of those players that was a PWO if it doesn't sound right. ;)

Texas has had a lot of success with the PWO program over the years, but those names mentioned are not amount them.

It was next to an impossible situation to e placed in.

Can you name one player around him in the huddle that was playing well?
And how was that different for Gunner? Texas had UGA on the ropes. He comes in, and unlike Arch, sustained his first drive, leading UGA to a TD. His entry caused those others guys in the huddle to play better.

Manning’s first drive, punt. Second drive, fumble resulting in points for UGA. Granted, Gunner had halftime, but …

Point of it all is that Arch had a shot, and didn’t deliver in that one particular instance, nor would most young QBs put in that situation. But then again, others have. It’s not in any way proof he won’t be great, but it’s a bit early to anoint him the magic man.

When Arch was inserted briefly at the end of the half, the entire team was in disarray.
I agree. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. And the Georgia defense was pinning their ears back and coming hard. That is what happens when you have no running game.

Or anyone in an 11-man huddle playing well.

Oh, man, give the last duel another chance!

really dig that movie...but I'm a Ridley Scott nerd to the point of forgiving him for Gladiator 2

This slander for Pearl Harbor will not stand. Bout to start issuing suspensions.

you're making threats over a movie with a 6.2 IMDb & 24% RT...it was a big dumb fun flick with some crazy cool plane stunts...put it on a Michael Bay list because whose gonna give a shit, but, Ben deserved better

so, how many real deal kickers are their in the portal? Even the guy we got, he kicked at Texas st, he's practically jumping from JV to Varsity all over again. He could completely fold in bigger moments in actually meaningful games. Who do u go to if he isnt doing well or gets hurt? What real deal kickers are gonna walk on to be a backup? Edit: the mesage sounds argumentative, im genuinely just curious

They straggle in and out. Even now, there is a few decent kicking options. In a world where you have 105 schollies like in the Big 10 this year, I'd say a couple need to be kickers.

ok ok, what's the update with that situation tho? Did the NCAA confirm 105 or is everyone just going off the prediction that they will?

There weren’t many it seems.

Stone will be the backup like this year I think.

My question is who is the backup punter.

My bigger question is wtf do we do next year.

Getting a portal guy at K and P seems to be the plan but how do you attract a backup or any depth with that strategy.

last years starter will be backup. I agree, can u get a bonfied stud kicker after shipley leave? And yea, i guess with ore scholarships theres no excuse, but I dont see an outcome where a legit kicker comes here as a walk on to sit behind and hope he can come in one day

Pretty sure they can go to 105 now but the SEC has elected to stay at 85 and then 20 walk ons.

We’ll hear if the total roster number gets cut to 105 next week. Pretty confident the answer will be higher than that(roster not scholarship)

You're constantly working the phones (and tampering) for the future.
