The Texas Longhorns have had success in recruiting Lake Travis High School of late, signing tight end Cade Brewer in the 2017 class and landing a commitment from quarterback Hudson Card for the 2020 class. If things go well, Texas will continue that trend in 2021 with tight end Lake McRee.
In late April, the Longhorns offered McCree, and the McCree said it was the realization of something he’d wanted for years.
“I mean, just growing up a fan of the school, going to all the games as a kid, it was just crazy,” McRee said. “It didn’t feel real, almost a surreal moment.”
The Texas offer made a strong impression on McRee, but after discussing his options with his family, he’s going to take some time with the recruiting process.
“I talked about it with my parents. I think I just want to, for the summer, enjoy the recruiting process, go to camps I’ve been invited to, see how my options play out,” McCree said.
This summer, McRee said he’ll attend a camp at Texas. He’s looking to hit a couple other camps as well, with stops at TCU and USC as possibilities. As for the Longhorns, McRee said he likes what he’s seen from the UT program, including during a junior day visit earlier this year.
“I just like all the coaching staff. They all reached out to me. Even when I went for a junior day they made it feel like home, even before they offered,” McRee said. “They showed me around like I was already a player there. I liked the hospitality.
At 6-5 and 215 pounds, McRee feels he’s a well-rounded tight end prospect, but he also knows there are areas in which he can improve.
“I would say my strength is definitely in one on one jump balls, that I can go up and get it. I’m working on my strength, but I think my technique for blocking is pretty good,” McRee said. “If I had to work on one thing, I’d say cleaning up my routes, so I can open up the field some.”
As a sophomore in 2018, McRee caught 17 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns.
