Per the New York Times, a business associate of Trump boasted of his ties to Putin and promised that with a potential business deal in Russia "our boy can become President of the USA and we can engineer it. I will get all of Putin's team to buy in on this."

The real estate deal in Russia, contemplated by Trump's company between late 2015 and early 2016, never got off the drawing board. One of Trump's attorneys, Michael Cohen, emailed the Kremlin to start discussions but never heard back.
