Isn't that what most of the bickering is between Conservative and Liberals? Or if you're a Brit, then between Conservatives and Labour?
On the left side, you have people pushing for a global economy. One big homogeneous interconnected system. And for many years, it certainly felt as if the world was moving that way. I used to believe that was the inevitable course of history, and tended to believe it would be a good thing.
But on the right side, you have people clinging to their unique nationality. There's not really a lot of difference between "Brexit" and "Make America Great Again." Both are rooted in a desire to preserve the essence of what made the respective countries thrive in the first place.
For me, I relate to it from my most recent visit to Paris. Their immigration policy has visibly changed the fabric of that city. Instead of crepe stands on every street corner, all I saw was falafel. The city shops are as much Arabic now as they are French.
I'm not saying there's something wrong with it. But I can understand how someone raised in France might come to feel resentful of the erosion of their traditional french culture.
Me personally, I now believe nationalism is a good thing. Let France be french. Let Germany be german. Let England be british. Stop trying to force them all into a blended mixture.
The majority of Brits want to be independent, and preserve the essence of what made their country. They are going to be out of the EU by January 31, now.
And likewise, America has been blessed with enormous fortunes of natural resources. We are the world's greatest super power and that is OK. We don't have to feel guilty for our many blessings. I respect our POTUS for negotiating better trade deals for my country. And I respect his desire to enforce our immigration process.
