No Burt or Holton Hill

He's the kind or WR they got at Louisville that was developed, but they have kids here in Texas that grew up with a spread offense. He might just be getting beat out by better player with better hands and route running ability.

ok...I'll bite... what do you mean no Burt or Hill.? Have they been kicked off the tem or just demoted?

Burt just needs to work on getting better at catching. He's a sophomore so he has time. I don't know what Hill's issues are but he needs to figure out if he wants to be a football player or not. D. Davis didn't play until trash time, so who's knows if he has attitude problems or just can't get the scheme. The combination of DBs yesterday played much better. There seemed to be more effort out there. Let's see if they can do it two weeks in a row...

A WR that has to work on catching, is a another way of saying his hands are bricks, when you see guys like Dede Westbrook look like a CF tracking a ball popped deep. Guys that could not catch option pitches in HS always had brick hands, and many were track guys.

I live in Kansas City. When Dick Vermeil was head coach of the Chiefs he used to say "There is a difference between a track guy who plays football and a football player who runs track". Burt at least right now appears to be in that first group

I am not ready to give up on Burt. He has made some good catches, but, I only remember two drops the last couple of years.

I agree, right now he has brick hands. I was just saying that he is only a sophomore and he has time to get better. It's called practice and some players can actually get better by doing it. Didnt he hurt his hand?

Speaking of receivers, we have a ton of receivers right now. I don't remember a time where we had this much contributing quality at the position.
Last nights contributors:
Duvernay
Leonard
Heard
Joe
Johnson
Warrick
Foreman
Oliver

That is a lot of receiver action for one team.

That's why this offense if given a chance to grow has a chance to be special. Shane gets on the same page with some of these guys... look out

Since we are discussing offense... and I am not complaining, but how much of this offense is due to D'onta Foreman? He is a beast and commands respect which frees up others. Was the OL (better) really doing that great of a job run blocking? Even the commentators said there were times Foreman made his own hole.

I think right now Foreman is a big part of the offensive success. A good running game is always key for a young QB. I imagine as Shane evolves he will be a bigger reason for the success

I would put 75% of our offenses success on Foreman, he is a guy that will keep defensive coordinators up at night.

I personally think he breaks 2000 yards this year if we can keep him healthy and also keep our oline healthy.

If we want this offense to grow, we better keep Strong, because any new coach is going to bring in a different offensive scheme and Gilbert/Mattox will move on. And talent or not, installing yet again a new offensive system will not bode well in 2017.

Yep. That's why I think there is some downside to firing him. It's also why I brought up the idea of promoting Gilbert to HC. Yeah it might sound weird at first, but not so much when you consider this.

Bob Stoops had never been a HC before going to OU
Same with Jimbo Fisher
Chip Kelly
Jim Tressel had been a D 2 head coach

I could give other examples. Yes it's a big step up but if you beleive he's a quality coach many other big time programs have had success not going with the sexy name.

Agree... but my concern is with the OL really pushing bodies around and creating holes. Kyle Porter is not exactly scooting through big seams when he is out there. Without Foreman, the running game is very pedestrian.

We really need to start throwing passes over the middle. We are lacking the intermediate routes. Teams are stacking the box and trying to take away the outside routes. All we need is to take advantage of the middle just a little and we will be destroying defenses. They are giving us the middle because they know we won't take it. That is crazy. We have a good TE why not use him.

More of Bluiett would be a great thing.

Coach Gilbert has been a great hire, but if he can't figure out how to utilize the middle of the field, he will quickly fall into GDGD territory. Two things bugged me about the ISU game. One was the lack of passing in the middle of the field, the other was some pretty questionable play calling.

As Devon D said, this offense is pretty simple, well it's week 7, It's time to make this offense a little more complex. There is nothing wrong with adding a few wrinkles each week. We have yet to run a single trick play on offense, why not a reverse to Duvernay or Heard, damn they have some wheels, let them use them.

When we get Warren back next year, and hoping Foreman doesn't bolt for the NFL, I'd love to see some two-back sets. OU has had some success with having Mixon and Perine back there at the same time. Both Warren and Foreman are capable, physical run blockers with those tree trunk legs. With the Oline older and stronger next year, they could smash some folks. I think it would be a fun to tinker with for an OC, especially with all the emerging talent on the outside to add to the strain on opposing DCs.

I agree with with you guys about using the TE. Strong wants to recruit TE's but we won't get a legit one because we don't use them. The Porter thing is a little different. He should be used more of a outside back. They are using him like Foreman and he's not as big as them. He can run up the gut but not every time. I like to see some passes to the RB as well

Yepper; been asking for this since the third game. I think Gilbert may be getting there, albeit, slowly. If memory serves me correctly....
  • Okie State – TD to TE Beck over the middle
  • ou – one slant, one curl middle-ish field
  • I-State – haven't finished the re-watch, but I think there were three. That one to A-Fore was a Buechele beauty (more of a seam, but I'll count it as middle-ish)
But, we still need to see more.

Agreed.

I agree 100%. I don't remember seeing a shovel pass or middle screen either.... some things to slow the pass rush would be nice.

I doubt Gilbert is having trouble figuring out how to use the middle, I think he is purposefully avoiding it for Shane's sake. The middle is where interceptions happen. That said, I agree, we need to hit the middle more often. Teams are overplaying the outside (which has led to INTs as well) and the middle is open. Maybe a few throws over the middle to keep em honest would be nice.

All these guys were successful OCs/DCs at great programs and Tressel was a former OSU assistant. Gilbert does not fit these guys mold, an OC for one season at a down program? Stoops and the others were all big time coordinators at great programs.

I agree. Gilbert at HC for Texas makes no sense. Not the same thing as the other examples.
