I'll have a write-up tomorrow about some of my evaluation takeaways from today's Under-Armour All-American camp in Houston, including thoughts on 2020 Texas OL commit Logan Parr, 2020 OL target Chad Lindberg, freakshow 2020 DE target Alfred Collins as well as general thoughts on random players who, as of now, I don't even know the names of yet, as I was mostly just recording the numbers on their jerseys.
For now, here is a quick article on major 2020 RB target Zach Evans, who I was able to grab for a quick interview before his abbreviated workout session at the event. Texas fans might be happy to hear that he didn't seem interested at all in talking to me until I told him that I wrote for the Texas site (and that it would be really quick).
"We're really just feeling it out, seeing how these colleges are," Evans said. When asked about his relationship with the Texas staff, Evans said, "It's cordial, we talk whenever we can, you know, sometimes during dead period, you actually have to contact them to check in. Coach Drayton and Coach Meekins are (the coaches I communicate most with), but also Coach Herman and (Bryan Carrington)."
On how the staff sees Evans being utilized at Texas, he had a very direct answer: "Continuously leading and being the face of the program." Texas is definitely giving Evans the hard sell in what he could become in Austin, but he also understands nothing is handed to you in Herman's program ... "Depending on how I work, but when I first come in, right from the start, I'd be competing with the other running backs."
For the record, Texas is probably the school that Evans is in the most contact with currently, and it seems like the Horns are going to be in it until the end with this one, it is just going to be a long wait for a player who is by far the staff's No.1 target on the recruiting board. Evans told me he weighed in at the camp today at 6-0 even and 207 pounds. I'm not sure how that compares to Keaontay Ingram when I interviewed him before his senior season in high school, but I am sure that Evans definitely LOOKS like the bigger and more athletic specimen than Ingram did at his age. What can you say, he's not considered by many as the top prospect in the nation for no reason. For example, Evans had his hands in his pocket while we were speaking, so I asked if they got a hand measurement on him and he said he thought it was 11". I told him that has to be wrong and that only like 3 people in the last 5 years at the combine have had over 11-inch hands. He then pulled his hand out of his jacket pocket and spread it wide and I thought, "holy shit, maybe those actually are 11-inch hands on this dude." It was like the width of a medium-sized pizza tin when stretched out.
I said that probably helps the receiving aspect of his game and Evans said that he thought of himself as a back that could help an offense in any way asked of him, as a runner, receiver, etc. I asked if he liked man, gap or zone blocking and Evans said, "just open the hole and I'll do what I can, I can do anything." Once he gets through the hole, though, it's off to the races -- Evans said he's been timed recently at 4.40 in the 40-yard dash, which needs about a half a tenth of a second tacked on due to being presumably hand-timed and also for the fish-tale purposes of self-reporting about these things. Even so, he's surely a sub-4.5 guy as a current junior in high school which is absurd at nearly 210 pounds.
I wish Evans would have actually worked out at the camp so I could have seen him move around a little more in real time, but all he did was take part in walk-throughs and warm-ups, much like another Texas target in attendance, OL Chad Lindberg from Clear Creek. I'll have more on Lindberg in a write-up tomorrow, but that guy doesn't really seem to like the camp circuit. With Evans, he was likely just there because he may want to play in the UA All-American game next January and to play in one of these sponsored, big-time All-Star games, you need to also show up at a regional camp near you so the evaluators can see you in person and also so there can be b-roll footage of you doing at least some drills wearing all that (in this case) Under-Armour Gear to use in the TV production-side of the game during cutaways and special features.
Evans said that Texas is definitely very much in the mix for his eventual pledge, but RBs coach Stan Drayton along with Texas fans will have to sweat this one out for the long haul. I don't envy the position Drayton is in having the reins on the most important recruit of the cycle as Evans said he's "definitely" the lead guy as far as his recruitment on the Texas end. Evans wants all the information he can gather during the process before making his final decision which means visits and contact with plenty of other staffs. "I don't have any visits or anything lined up right now (but as for the overall recruiting timeline,) I'm going to wait until the end. I don't want to do anything early. Because, then you could regret it later on. I'd just rather see every school, see where we're at and make the decision then."
