I am playing on bringing the wife to Austin in December for our 8th anniversary. Close to downtown, but we won't be doing the bar scene (she will be 6 months pregnant). Any recommendations?

The Hyatt on the south side of the river (Ladybird Lake/Town Lake) has a pretty awesome view of the downtown skyline. Little quieter on that side.

So I had a weekend booked at the Hyatt Regency and then the wife informed me of some plans that weekend so I tried moving it up two weeks and the price doubled. Now I want this weekend to be nice, but I'm not paying darn near $400/night. So @clob94 that rules out the Driskill too!

Anyone stayed at the Omni at Southpark or the Omni Downtown?

Omni at southpark is a suburban hotel. Relatively new, remote. Downtown was a little shabbier, but location is great.

Maybe a more affordable hotel, Hampton Inn, LaQuinta, Townplace Suites, Fairfield Inn, etc.?

Stayed here in September for the first time.

    https://instagram.com/hotelvanzandt?utm_source=ig_profile_share&igshid=1hkuggikoanws

Pro's-It's next to Rainey, complementary beer/wine during check in, roof top pool/fire place, restaurant/bar, cozy for the wife, they have some complementary happy hour with free brew/wine, great bed and views (depends on room).

    Con's-next to Rainey (busy)

This place is contemporary or boutiquish so a youngish vibe is usually hanging I'd say it was 25-45. Dogs are also allowed so you'll see a few in the lobby.

Omni Southpark is in a weird location. The Omni downtown gets filled with people working with state govt thanks to location so they don't even pretend to try when it comes to service.

Omni Barton Creek Resort would be my choice for that kind of weekend but it is 20 minutes from downtown.

But what would she eat? That was my first choice, the misses didn't want a room that opened to the outside world...she is very insulated!

LOL! Open to the outside world, I like that, well then get her a room at the Travis County jail, that won't be open...LOL..LOL

Get her a salad from HEB and get another 12 pack...and her a case of water, seriously, that's why usually use Holiday Inn Express or one like it, its just cost so much to travel nowadays and especially buy anything in Austin, you can always count on Church's or WhataBurger or Jim's in a clutch, I like Matts El Rancho when I go to Austin, Franklin's BBQ is overrated, its a tourist trap for BBQ now cause of all the publicity, remember everybody's got the best BBQ in Austin they think! ,Its not easy traveling with a Women whom is fixin to Domino, I done it 4 times I know, just make her comfortable and try to have a good time, really money no object at this point to her happiness! LOL!

    Good Luck!

Since she’s preggers check out Churro Co. Food Truck off of 1st St. by apartments and the river is down below. She’ll be craving junk food probably.

IF she’s craving pizza you can get your beer in at ABGB. The pizza is good and beer is too. Kind of sweet talk her into it!

I've tried it. Just don't like the taste of coffee no matter what brand it is or how its brewed, what's mixed with it, etc. Just doesn't taste or smell good to me.

I remember those days fondly...imagine if you will, being a baby cop, you're paid to carry a gun and drive like an asshole and chase gangbangers for 10 hours a day. You live and work in a town with 24 hour bars and casinos.....good times....

There are studies out about how many taste buds you have and its correlation to whether you'll like coffee or not. Off the top of my head better tasters(2nd highest number of taste buds) like it and super tasters(highest number of taste buds) don't.

    Interesting.

Y'all knock yourselves out on the coffee thing. If I want something to drink in the morning, I'll drink water, OJ, Coke Zero, tea or hot cocoa. No coffee for MM. Hell, I don't even own a coffee pot.

When I worked offshore, it was all Community coffee, spoon could stand up in it, nowadays started drinking Green Mountain coffee or the Donuts coffee, but prefer the Green Mountain Breakfast Blend but switch off to Duncan Donuts coffee, which ever goes on sale

Maybe ya need a light brew coffee MM!

There is a local joint here where I live that gets it coffee from a brewer in Austin. From farm to my house in 15 days total, so the coffee is always fresh and quality. I'm a big fan of espresso, so I have a maker at the house that does almost as quality as the professional stuff. But when I do regular coffee at the office, I use either a French Press or an AeroPress. Both are very simple devices but I prefer the AeroPress because it cleans itself when you use it.
Also there is a new place that I just found about in Austin called 22 beans, I believe...they roast the beans themselves and make their own styles. Not bad so far.
If you really want to splurge, take a look at Blue Mountain Coffee out of Jamaica. The beans are only grown in a certain range of elevation in the blue mountains. The process from bean to table is ridiculously long because of the process they go through to select only the best beans, it is painstaking. It is tough to get your hands on at local stores like HEB and stuff like that, but you if you have a bigger coffee/tea supplier, they can most likely get it. I know the DeCoty coffee company here can get it, but it is $60-70/lb. So if you ever go on vacation to Jamaica, you better load up all you can get because down there it is dirt cheap.

Bat Guano coffee is different than Blue Mountain I believe. Kona Coffee is really good too still expensive but not as bad as BM . I have some new beans that a friend gave me that are pretty good think it’s Costa Rican. Nothing like grinding the beans and then brewing them. Whole house smells like a coffee shop. Then a little pan dulce! Shiiiiiit!

Supposedly the best coffee comes from war torn countries and countries that been war torn for decades and decades. Human blood has some qualities in it that allow coffee beans to grow and taste better. Something it does for the soil
