OT: Surface vs Other Tablets

Looking to get my dad a tablet for Christmas. He's not the most tech savy so I was thinking that a surface would be an easy transition for him since it's essentially a laptop, and he owns a laptop already. But I was also thinking that since he does have a laptop maybe a ipad or samsung tablet would be better for him since it'd be different. Anybody have any feedback that could help a dude out?
