Mine was sharing a pop icicle with my brother when we was 8 and 10 on the front porch in Hyde Park ( he later died in "The Nam)", playing football in the street and floats at the Pig Stand and most important hoping the wind would blow in your bedroom window as it was hot as hell. no AC back in them days and throwing water balloons at Police cars and watching Channel 7 go off the air with the Star Spangled banner playing at midnite and of course sitting in Knothole Section of Memorial Stadium watching the Horns win

In reference to okiehorn's post:
For me one thing as a kid in going to watch the San Antonio Dodgers and seeing Steve Sax and Fernando Valenzuela both play. They were getting a lot of buzz even at that point in their careers.

We used to soak newspapers in water and make balls out of them and throw at passing cars in the neighborhood. Sometimes into open windows. Cars would come to screeching halt, and we scatter between houses in pre-planned escape routes. Teenager drivers would chase us, but never caught. Thinking about it now, it was dangerous.

Building tree houses in undeveloped wooded areas. Collecting old Coke/Pepsi/7 UP bottles (the big ones for $.25) and turn them into 7-11's for cash. Luv Ya Blue, Bum Phillips, Dan Pastorini, Earl Campbell. Hated the Cowboys and Steelers. Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuz. JR Richards.

Oh, and 8th grade appreciation dance themed to Saturday Night Fever. But loved that 1st slow dance.....

Loved those '70s.

Riding our bikes in the fog behind the mosquito spraying truck. Explains the wierd body growths now. Listening to Longhorn football games on a transitor radio, while hanging on to a burnt orange rabbits foot.

had a large field across the street that was perfect for football and baseball. had the basketball goal at our house where we played so much that matter what my mom did, she couldn't get grass to grow for years after we'd left the nest

We had a "lot" in our neighborhood. It was the corner lot right when you entered the neighborhood. Had many football and baseball games there, would play home run derby and hit balls into the neighbor's backyard. Also had a few brawls there.

My mom still lives in that neighborhood. A few years back, someone built a 2 story monstrosity of a house (surrounded by 1 story ranches) on the "lot". I always joke about burning it down to save the "lot". My wife doesn't understand.

We also had a makeshift fort back in the woods. We had a sit down toilet there and everything. Mostly used it as a place to go set stuff on fire. Not the smartest but we all came out alright.

This was the 90's, I'm not that old, but I imagine kids of today have lost a lot of this already.

Yeah kids of today for the most part don't have any of these experiences. I make mine play outside and have to pry those electronics out of their hands.

Bet I knocked every street light out on Speedway in Hyde Park trying to be a Texas Longhorn punter and barefooted at that..tried anyway, did not ,make it...that's why I always like Franklin cause I knew how it was barefooted

As a kid,Playing football in the front yard with friends that was under a street light and you could keep playing when it got darkOn the weekends you could hear the bands playing from a very nearby stadium and when one team scored you could hear their fightsong "Dixie".I thought I would play in that stadium one day and I did.

Going to the boardwalk with the family was always great fun, or playing with the family dog. In the fall, it was fun to make paths in the pine needles with an old-style steel rake. During the spring, one of the best things was to climb to the very top (almost) of the widest pine trees out front, and watch life continue below. No one had any idea you were up there. Oh, and wandering around the woods and building tree forts.

The very best thing, though, was that every day after school we had a touch football game. I think it was no matter what the season, we did that.

Should-I-mention-this Department:
Playing "doctor" with my next-door neighbor Emily. "Hey, what's THAT!"

Everyday after school playing street football (tackle in the grass and touch in the street). Then having to wait for cars to pass to restart the game. Those were the days!

Forgot to add hearing the ice cream man on the next street then run home to ask my mom for $1.50. Thanks FBH for bringing back some good memories before real life kicked in.

Our church had a camping club in the 70s. Every big holiday we'd have 8-10 families go camping. Some had boats, some campers (actual A/C), and some mini-bikes. So you could ski, fish, swim, play cards, or ride mini-bikes all day long. How this was relaxing to my parents, I have no idea. But damn those were great times for a pre teen.

Dove hunting off of Ferguson and Samson Road back in the eighties, before Central Freight moved in. Playing and fishing at the creek off of Springdale Rd all day long until mom rang a cow bell for us to come home. Playing football under the stands at Reagan HS football games, back when the Raiders were feared in this town.

Going to Katy Park to watch the Waco Pirates. Playing war near the creek in Mr. Bradford's pasture near the Veteran's Hospital with BB guns and cherry bombs. Playing ball (whatever the season) every day. Getting out of school. Parking with a date near Lake Waco. Dove hunting near Valera every Labor Day. Fishing when my Dad didn't have to work.

Edit: Cherry bombs thrown under cars passing on New Road at night are more fun than water balloons, mud balls, and soaked newspaper, but you have to be able to run when you screw up and throw one at Officer Limmer's patrol car.

My dad and I used to spotlight rabbits between the levers just south of downtown Dallas. 54 Ford convertible, took turn driving and literally riding shotgun. Best night, we killed 8. Somehow my mother could make a good stew of them.

I've got two.
Growing up on Salado Creek. Any and all kinds of fishing, also swimming. Back then you could go up and down the creek and no one would fuss. Playing jack city. 3 of us would play baseball with a broom stick and a tennis ball. Did it all summer long. That's why I love the movie sandlot, it reminds me of earlier days.

hell....you guys had it easy. I was too busy chipping flint rocks to make arrowheads so the family could eat to have any fun. Sometimes I had it easy and just had to scrape hides so we had clothes.....
