Several years ago, my parents bought me my dream piece of Texas Longhorn memorabilia, a game used Helmet. We bought it on a whim as we were leaving the stadium after a Longhorn Win. That helmet has been proudly displayed in my home since then, my prized possession that was with me everytime I watched Texas play from home.
Several weeks ago, inspired by a former Texas football player who passed away, I did a little research. I came across a photo of another player who passed away recently. This photo was of a player named Paden Kelley who passed away a year and a half ago to cancer. In the photo, his helmet sat next to him. I immediately knew that I had that very same helmet, his helmet.
Through the power of social media, and working with the University of Texas, I was able to validate that I did indeed have Padens helmet and was quickly able to get in touch with his family.
Tonight, at the stadium that means so much to me, at the same stadium Paden Kelley gave his all for Texas, I gave his helmet back to who it belonged to, his family.
It was an absolute honor of a lifetime to hand his helmet to his sister, Kat. I want to thank everyone who made this possible. From everyone at UT, to everyone on social media who reached out and helped with this, to Jake Garcia with KVUE and to The Longhorn Network who will be telling this story, and most importantly to the Kelley Family for allowing me to spend a little time with that piece of their loved one.
