Question I haven't seen asked about the Boeing Max8

So when Obama made a bunch of rules about energy efficiency it was obvious that appliances sucked. My oven takes almost 30 minutes to preheat (electric), and when my wife wanted to replace our 1990s washer/dryer I told her absolutely not after my mother's experience with hers (not enough water to rinse, POS).

It has been in the back of my mind that somehow this whole Max8 thing is more about energy efficiency from a policy rather than an economic standpoint. I have no knowledge of anything other than Airbus was making some fuel efficient large engines and Boeing rushed to do the same and in order to accommodate them had to make a dangerous plane design. If it turns out this was not about selling airliners on fuel cost savings but rather a response to government policies not just here but around the globe, I would not be surprised.
