There is some really embarrassing literature out there today from fringe left protesters from pre made signs to cover all potential nominations, to a radical fringe women's group releasing a statement of condemnation with XX in place of the name of Trump's appointment. Some may view this as insignificant, but they are symbolic, and eye opening for independents. These people weren't going to support anyone. No matter what.
When coupled with the recent assertion that socialist Ocasio-Cortez' platform of socialism and "abolish ICE" being the Democratic party's future per the DNC chair, it is abundantly clear that the Democratic party has veered radically to the left. This is not dissimilar to what happened to the Democrats when Ronald Reagan won the White House in 1980. Regan's election caused the D's to go nuts and they followed it up by nominating two unelectable candidates for Presidency (Mondale/Dukakis).
What it means is this: the moderates of the Democratic party are being pushed to the back of the bus. This will result in the party nominating leftists for the Presidency in 2020, and then again in 2024. Moderate Democrats will not support a Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, and they will either not vote, or they will defect to the Republicans. Independents will go Republican - bigly. It is plausible that the Democrats will not realize what has happened and nominate an electable candidate till the 2028 Presidential election.
