Not really recruiting, but..... Are the days of players sitting a year after transferring over with Tate Martell getting a waiver? Hard to see the NCAA telling anyone no anymore.
You know as much about that topic as I do, but it sure seems like they’re approving just about everyone’s waiver requests. With that in mind, you have to figure Bru McCoy will also be cleared to play this year, so that’s good news for Texas. The question for me is will the NCAA keep with its current practice moving forward, or will they tighten up the potential restrictions on transfers?
How many wide receivers does Texas take in the 2020 class? Who do you see as of now the most likely candidates to join the Texas class?
I’m not expecting a huge wide receiver class this year after Texas took four in 2019 (five if you count Jordan Whittington) and three in 2018, but I would think three is pretty good estimate with John Burt, Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson all being seniors this year.
As for likely candidates, that’s a pretty tough call right now. Troy Omeire will probably land at either Texas or Texas A&M. Temple’s Quentin Johnston make a ton of sense. Johnny Wilson out of California has Texas in his top five and people on the West Coast think the Longhorns are legitimate players for him. Mookie Cooper could still return to the mix. Don’t sleep on Texas’ chances with Jaden Hullaby either … UT just might be the team to beat there.
How many times in your background have you seen a player de-commit and then re-commit to the same school?
It doesn’t happen often, although RB Trey Sanders did it last year in decommitting from Alabama and then signing with the Tide in December. In talking to Mookie Cooper this week, I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m expecting him to re-commit to UT at some point, but I definitely would not rule it out.
Is Zachary Evans a silent commit? What about Kelee Ringo?
I like the way you think, but there’s still work to be done on both of those. If I had to pick one that was closer to committing out of the two, I’d go with Ringo.
Does Texas still lead for Zachary Evans? Even after that video
Don’t worry about that video (he listed some schools standing out and didn’t mention Texas, for those that missed it). Texas is still in a great spot with Evans.
Gun 2 your head... Do the Horns land Zach Evans?
Three Evans questions in a row … nice. Gun to my head, yes on Texas landing Evans. I already have my FutureCast pick in for the Longhorns. Long way to go in that one though.
Most undervalued current commit?
There are only four commitments and they’re all ranked pretty high, but I’d have to go with Jaylen Garth, who isn’t in the Rivals250. Unfortunately, Garth is on the mend from an injury so there hasn’t been a chance to really evaluate him this spring.
What are the current negative recruiting pitches used against Texas this cycle?
I haven’t heard of much, to be honest, but it usually revolves around playing time and depth charts … which is always an interesting pitch because you’re basically telling a kid that he’s not good enough to compete at a place like Texas.
Buy or Sell: Texas lands at least half of these prospects:
Bijan Robinson
Kelee Ringo
Johnny Wilson
Justin Flowe
Kendall Milton
Zach Evans
I’m going to sell, but just barely. I really like Texas’ chances to land Evans and Ringo, but I’m not sure they’ll get a third from that group.
Which uncommitted and offered LBs does Texas sign in, '20 class?
TX offered
Justin Flowe CA
Mekhail Sherman DC
Damian Sellers AZ (Ringo teammate)
Brennon Scott TX
Josh White TX
I think Texas is the team to beat for Josh White, although LSU and Oklahoma are threats (and he visited Alabama last weekend). Brennon Scott doesn’t really tip his hand so I don’t have a great feel for where he’s leaning. Texas has a good show with Justin Flowe but really needs to get him on campus, which should happen soon.
What is the likelihood of Texas recruiting Rival 250 OL Joshua Braun, Parker's brother?
Based on conversations I’ve had, I’m not expecting Texas to be involved there. Look for Braun to stay closer to home.
Does further evaluation of James Brockermeyer in any way hurt our chances with brother Tommy?
I don’t know that it hurts UT’s chances, but it definitely doesn’t help. You have to figure if UT offers both, they’ll probably get both. Of note, James picked up an LSU offer on Wednesday.
If we get Zack Evans, will Kendal Milton follow?
I know the two have discussed it, but I just don’t see that happening.
How many commits do you think Texas will have after the Spring Game?
The spring game is coming up in a few weeks so I wouldn’t expect a ton of action before that, but I could see another commitment or two happening before the end of that weekend.
Damieon George said he wants to commit by end of summer, and both he and Evans are on record they want to go to the same school. Does that mean Zack will commit at the same time?
I don’t see Evans committing early, which will be an interesting dynamic if George does stick to his plan to commit this summer. Most likely, George will push back his decision or if he does commit in the summer, he’ll continue to take some visits and keep the door open a bit.
Is Texas recruiting Ja’Quinden Jackson as a QB now and if so, how does Card feel about it?
When I asked Jackson a few weeks ago which schools were talking to him the most about playing quarterback, Texas was the first one out of his mouth. He’s a good enough player you just take him and figure out where he’ll help you once he gets on campus. As for how Card feels about it, I haven’t asked Hudson but he’s told me previously that he knows there’s a chance Texas will take two QB/Athletes in the 2020 class.
Who’s the best 2020 recruit we land not named Zack Evans?
Kelee Ringo. I’ve been a huge fan of his since seeing him at the Five-Star Challenge last summer.
Will the end of summer be the next surge in commitments? Do you keep a list of those that have indicated that they will be announcing then?
I think that’s a pretty safe assessment. A lot of guys have told me they’d like to commit before their senior season begins. I don’t keep a list, but that’s a pretty good idea. I probably need to go through my old notes and put one together.
