Just days after reports after athletic director Mike Perrin said coach Charlie Strong’s Texas program would need evaluation but not immediate wholesale changes, Sports Illustrated is reporting that Strong will be out as the Longhorns’ coach at the end of the season.

Texas lost 49-31 to Oklahoma State last weekend and is currently 2-2. Strong, who demoted defensive coordinator Vance Bedford and took over the defensive play-calling.

Strong was asked about reports regarding his job status and he essentially skirted the question.

“I told our players, ‘We have eight games left, you go play and let me worry about rest,'” Strong said, per Horns Digest.

If Texas has indeed decided to part ways with Strong, waiting until the end of the season, especially with at least eight games remaining, seems ridiculous. Anything could happen in those eight games. Texas hasn’t had a winning season since going 8-5 in 2013. The Longhorns could sweep the rest of the season or it could be mediocre. Either way, it’s now out there that Strong is a lameduck coach, which will no doubt have an effect on the way the Longhorns play.

McCombs: "It's not my call. But if they decide it's over, it doesn't do anybody any good to drag it out."

What a cop out of true journalism this reporter wrote. Why is letting somebody finish out the season ridiculous? If even true, however, one would at least think it would be more detrimental to the coach to fire him immediately. I mean at least he can regroup and finish the season on a high note and set up another coaching position with some leverage. You can't win with these people that fan the flame no matter what you do.

Normally I am against mid season coaching changes. Just don't think they make much difference. However if they indeed have decided to move on from Strong they need to do it now. If not they could find themselves in quite the bind. What if he wins out or goes 7-1 and wins 9-10 games? I get that no one sees that as a possibility at the moment but it's not crazy either. Especially if Strong does improve the defense. I mean just a little bit better D and we're 4-0. So if that we're to happen what then? Gonna fire him after a 9 win season? Makes no sense. If you don't want Strong can him now. Don't get yourself in a bind

You know Strong has made mistakes here and maybe it isn't the right fit who knows. I feel like he's been on the verge of being fired since the day he was hired. I hope the next guy gets treated a bit better.

Not true, but going 6-7 and 5-7 will not help anybody's case for being a HC at UT...or just about anywhere else. This is similar to what happened with Muschamp at Florida.

Some random notes from Inside Texas...

-the injury to RB Chris Warren is a PCL and he's likely done for the season.

-CB Holton Hill was suspended for the OK State game and they're not sure if he'll play for OU despite being listed on the depth chart. He's still in the doghouse.

-Bedford was the one who started out calling defensive plays against OK State, but Strong took over quickly.

-they're hearing that the news of Strong being replaced was coming out during the OK State game, signaling things may be moving faster than previously thought.

I get that. And I also get that the big money guys strongly beleive we should of been better in year one and 2. I just don't beleive the roster allowed you to be much better. And I'd say the same thing if Nick Saban were here. I mean seriously Saban might was went 7-5 and 6-6. The roster just wasn't they good especially at the QB spot.

Now I think Mike Perrin has really screwed the pooch here. It's not his fault his inexperience as an AD is showing. I think he and the boosters badly want to bring in "their guy". Which is fine but if you have made the decision to move on from Strong you ought to do it while the story is on your side. Let's say Strong wins out or wins 9. Now you can him and that's a PR disaster. And probably hurts your ablity to get a Herman, Peterson, etc.

Wow. I think he needs to go, but letting this out seems stupid. Really only giving him 2 years and 4 games, before calling it a day. 3 years doesn't give the next guy a warm and fuzzy feeling, but 2.3 years.

Wow, Red don't play. I expected this to be handled very PC, but they are going hard the other way I guess.

What strong has going against him right now is that Miles was fired. Herman is on the clock and everybody at UT is panicking. You gotta feel for Gilbert, I think this is his worst case scenario right now. No wonder they had to get on a plane to go get him.

I agree. Gilbert is smart and probably felt that this scenario playing out was a real possibility. Which explains his reasons decline and bid up the money to make it worth it for him.

Lets also not forget he is getting 5 MILLION a year. You bet your ass that he better show improvement. We have had 4 blocked field goals now. 1 in the ND game and 3 in the OSU game plus the defense is in total shambles.

1. I don't believe this report. They would not inform Strong he was fired and then let him play out the rest of the year. This material from "a source" is wrong time and time again.
2. There is really no reason to fire him now. Our season ends in November. That's plenty of time to hire someone else.
3. LSU fired Miles mid season specifically so he could not turn the season around and save his job. That's kind of the "danger" here if you are anti-Strong. He could win 8 games and make this a hard decision. That's why again, if you have fired him, you make it official now.

I hear ya. But if Gilbert keeps the offense going like this he will be able to go just about anywhere he wants. He has done a night and day better job with Texas than the last several years combined.

I agree, Gilbert is going to be a hot commodity, he wont be hurting in the least. Question, if Herman were to become UT's coach. Who eould you rather have as your offendive coordinator? Gilbert or Applewhite?

I would prefer Gilbert. Applewhite will be a HC soon, maybe next year.

I assume Gilbert will out the door with a check that would make it tough for me to shed any tears for him. He earned his check.

Do you think, if Herman leaves, that Houston pulls the trigger on Applewhite and makes him the head guy? Keep the system in place and you know you aren't going to replace a guy like Herman at Houston. Plus if Herman were to leave Gilbert alone, that is one less thing that he should have to worry about in year 1. Would allow him to completely focus on getting the defensive side fixed. However, the second half of games the offense has become stagnant and hasn't performed as well as in the first half. That being said 37 points should win you a lot of games!

Pump the brakes. This is rumblings from billionaires who have press agents. If you think that a few of our billionaires from Texas don't have VERY close relationships with big media, you're crazy.

McCombs has Clear Channel----- enough said.

Here's how this plays out- nothing has been decided yet. Perrin doesn't have Dodds savvy approach to things-- will Herman be considered--- certainly. BUT-- we should also look elsewhere behind the scenes.
Peterson isn't coming here. His family has health issues and they love the doctor they have and refuse to use anyone else. The doctor isn't moving. Period. Neither is Chris. He's out.
Les and Art--- if I have to address these two, you need help. Not happening.
Jimbo-- we don't want him. He got lucky with Winston. FL st has played below their means since then.
David Shaw-- don't want him. The "power" running game that Charlie wanted here didn't work with Watson or Wickline. Plus, I believe that Shaw is still benefiting from the "Harbaugh effect" as I like to call it.
Jim Harbaugh- ship has sailed.
Jon Gruden-- ship has sailed thanks to Patterson.
Herman-- no resume. I like the guy but his resume is shorter than charlie's and my big complaint about charlie was his "lack" of a solid resume.

This leaves us with only a handful of choices. I know who I want--- I get to hang out with with Perrin and Fenves and Admiral McCraven next weekend when my uncle is posthumously inducted into the Longhorn hall of honor so you can bet your a$$ I'm going to ask some questions.

UT donor Red McCombs said he's not advocating a firing, and won't. "But don't tell me you can't fire someone in the middle of the season."

These JR Ewing-types like Red McCombs are why Charlie isn't succeeding. Let the guy coach and leave him the h*ll alone and he'll do just fine. Whoever hires him next will thank Texas for their meddling & impatience.

I tend to agree. But.........It's also about fit. Regardless, I like what he has done for the program's culture and the flipping of the roster. He finally has a QB, a true freshmen at that and an OC that can produce offense. It's too bad he had to be so loyal to Vance in the process. It may very well cost him his job. I look forward to seeing what he does with full control of the defense. Simplification and scheme will change the outcome. There was a noticeable shift last weekend.

Exactly. I'm assuming they hired Strong to come in and bring the system he ran at Louisville with him. It seems to me that Bridgewater helped Watson and Strong out perhaps more than the other way around. Now Charlie gets here and as the Inside Texas writer mentioned in another article, went through 3 and is on his 4th offensive signal caller in 3 years. He has now demoted his DC. From an outsider's perspective, it appears that there is absolutely no stability in his staff and that Charlie is scrapping one thing and plugging in something else hoping it works. The higher ups have to recognize thatat this point Charlie seems way in over his head and has no idea how to get it figured out. Very Muschamp-esque. That's my opinion at least.

Honestly, looking at what is out there, my top 5 guys I'd like to at lease interview

1. Tom Herman
2. Dabo Sweeney
3. Bobby Petreno
4. Larry Fedora
5. Butch Jones

I would be happy with Herman, but I know for a fact that Bobby Petrino is the best coach on that list when it comes to winning football games. However, he is the anti-Strong when it comes to off the field matters.

Chris Peterson at Washington should be candidate number 1 IMO. He's basically a proven edition of Herman. After that Petrino then Herman. That's a pretty good list though. Another guy who should get a look but be further down on the list is Venables. You won't have to go that far but he is a sunnofabich of a recruiter and a great DC.

He's not coming regardless of what they throw at him

Texas should NEVER NEVER NEVER hire a coach who has NEVER been a head coach.

Chris Peterson is not, and I repeat, is NOT leaving the Pacific Northwest. His daughter is sick and he refuses to leave her doctor. Period.

Chris Peterson is not coming here.

I agree but you have to ask or pursue. My position is he is the number 1 guy and should be. If he says he's not interested then you move on...for Christ sake you guys went after Saban at Bama...nothing is off the table nor should it be for an institution such as Texas.

I'm going to go ahead and double down in saying that Strong has not been fired. That report is bogus. The rule of sports journalism these days is that if you can get one person to claim anonymously to have inside information, you can report that information as "from a source" and put it out there. No one can be held accountable for its accuracy.
I will say this though. Lets say he somehow wins 6 of the remaining 8 games and has an 8 win record at the end of the regular season. This is the point you have to make a decision. You can't wait to see the bowl result, and shouldn't even if you could, because bowl results are not good indicators of future program success. What worries me is how HORRIBLE he has been with hires. And whats worse, he hangs on to the bad coaches too long. Gilbert has worked out so far, but how long until he gets hired away? Lets say we get a good DC, same thing will happen eventually. Is this team under Strong always going to be a coordinator away from being elite?

I sure think it would be best to keep Strong but take a hard nosed position at replacing Bedford, like yesterday. Wad up all the spare change and buy the absolute best out there. I REALLY like what Gilbert has done and think it's worth it just to keep him here to develope his offense.

Recruiting will take a major nosedive if they do not confirm the honoring of Strongs contract commitment.

If UT were to land Herman, Peterson or any other proven HC I think they would retain most of the 17 class. UNLESS Strong has a good finish (8-9 wins) and still gets the boot. That could be a PR disaster and really hurt the university in the eyes of recruits. Not to mention make it hard to attract a top coach.
