Smfh----

SB carried the ball 6 times for -1 yard and guess what??
We STILL averaged 6 yards per carry.........

Think about that for a second. Take away his 6 carries for -1 yard and we average 6.8 yards per carry.......

Who can be stopped averaging 6.8 ypc? Apparently we can.

So what have we learned about this team after 3 weeks?

Well, our ND win, while it looked impressive at the time, has lost much of its luster. After being shellacked by Mich st, ND is obviously not all that and a bag of chips. UTEP, who we impressively ran over- was crushed by Army. ARMY! At home, none the less.

Prior to the game I warned of trying to out score Cal. We needed to run the damn football, eat the clock and leave Strawberry Canyon ASAP. That game ended around 1:30 am central time. 4 hours long. Waaaaaaay too long of a game.... Long games means lots of passing (usually).

Vance, I don't know how much of the play calling you actually do on D-- but if you called more than 3 consecutive D calls last night, you're on the hook for this loss as well as Charlie. I can't blame the O (even though there were several WTF moments on O) because the O hung 43 points. How can you not win a game when you score 43 points? Oh I know how. When your D gives up 50. And mind you, it SHOULD have been 57.

57 points. 57. Fifty fvcking seven points.
Guess who else Cal scored 50 on?

Hawaii. The flaming pineapples. We gave up as many points to Cal as HAWAII............

San Diego state held Cal to fewer points..... and beat them...

I just lack the words.

Yep. Just look at the points VB surrendered as a DC for his first 2 years as a DC at Oklahoma State (2005-2006). It's a lot. His 2nd DC job was at Louisville from 2010-2013. Texas is his 3rd DC stop, 2014-2016, and Texas is giving up a historic amount of points. VB's resume says he is not good here or in the Big 12.

I read that Strong said in the press conference (after the game), that we only had 1 busted coverage on defense and he doesn't blame any coaches.

We most certainly had more than 1 busted coverage. He and the coaching staff better start taking responsibility for the sh!t shows. Otherwise, he won't last at Texas. I predict Strong is fired this year or the next, IF our defense doesn't improve and we win 8 games.

I like Strong as a recruiter and talent evaluator. I am very concerned about his hiring and game management abilities.

From bringing Watson with him to keeping Bedford who already got fired from being a DC in the Big 12.....and Bedford has had 2 of the worst defenses in Texas football history.

PUNTING the ball with under 2 minutes to go!! What????!! At least go down swinging. Texas was not going to stop Cal with under 2 mins and 2 TOs.... Why would he just give the game away?.... At least try to win.

Young....young.....young. I know Texas is young...but dang!!! Are you telling me that NO coach could get more out of this team? For Real?

I will never go against the Longhorns and the season is not over. I thought 8 was the bottom this year...not so sure now. Maybe Texas gets it together and goes on a run. I hope so.

In 2005, during Big 12 league play, VB's defense surrendered: 34 points to Colorado, 38 points to Missouri, 62 points to Texas A&M, 37 points to Iowa State, 47 points to Texas, 17 points to Tech, 44 points to Baylor, and 42 points to OU. That is an average of 40 points per game.

1 busted coverage my a$$. Hansen caught 12 balls and 4 of those he was wide open. I mean wide open.

The face punch is he hasn't seen the film yet and will have to pull back from that statement come his Monday presser.

I'm going over in my mind how the secondary looked during my trips to practice and I'm remembering seeing confusion between our safeties and our corners. But nothing like this......

In 2006, during Big 12 league play, VB's defense surrendered: 31 points to Kansas State, 32 points to Kansas, 34 points to Texas A&M, 29 points to Nebraska, 36 points to Texas, 24 points to Baylor, 30 points to Tech, and 27 points to OU. That's an average of 30 points per game. His next DC job would be Louisville in 2010.

This is Vance Bedford's complete 4 season resume at Louisville. In 2010, at Louisville, VB's defense surrendered an average of 19 points per game. In 2011, his defense gave up 19.7 points per game. In 2012, his defense gave up 23.7 points per game. In 2013, his defense gave up 11.3 points per game.

Weren't we told that Haines as the QB of the secondary supposed to remedy our inexperience or to impart knowledge and wisdom to the youth back there? I am by no means implying it is all Dylan's fault but, it is frustrating how bad the secondary looked.

so if Haynes..(being all that football savy) had recognized that dropped football and picked it up right away and hauled ass he could have scored the winning TD?....sort of like the returned extra point in the ND game

I was in grad school until July. So, I wasn't keeping up with offseason football, per usual. So, I don't know about Haines. Sorry.

Dylan Haines is a good guy by all accounts. But, all of us know that he just isn't athletic or fast enough to be in the secondary. He is also a very bad open field tackler. I believe the coaches made the claim "QB of the secondary". I was being sarcastic at their insistence on playing him so much.

I seem to remember another player, under Mack Brown, given a similar name-coach on the field. He was a 2 star recruit and slow. His name is Blake Gideon.

It's weird because the refs said, in essence, that nobody from Texas grabbed the ball in a timely fashion.....sooooooooo just so I'm clear, a timely fashion is how long exactly....I mean, it's a "live" ball. Does a l8ve ball become a dead ball after a certain amount of time or does something have to occur in order to make it a dead ball...... like a whistle maybe?

I would imagine GDDH could have picked it up and ran it back. Given his situational awareness and perhaps angle on the play, I doubt he realized the Cal players attempt at showboating equated to him dropping the ball prior to crossing the plane.

Btw, did anyone else notice there was another player showboating in similar fashion yesterday while his team was bing routed?

Black Gideon was also on our 2009 natty team. And do you remember that damn play against tech the year before where he dropped a simple interception that would of ended the game and we would of played for a natty that year as well and tech still plays that video over and over before football games. I would take Gideon over Haines any day of the week.

Blake Gideon has a skin hanging on the wall. GDDH should BE skinned and hung on a wall.

Coach Strong is a good recruiter and evaluator but i think his problem is his loyalty. He had so much for Watson and it hurt him alot with this team. Then realized the problem and fixed it by firing him. Now, he has his loyalty towards Bedford. I predict that Bedford will be fired as well at the end of the season. Everyone longhorn fan can see what the problem is. If Strong doesn't resolve this problem by the end of the year, he(Strong) will be gone at the end of the next year. I really don't want to see him fail because it will hurt our recruiting in a major way and shift the recruiting to the aggys and even UH. All we can do is hope that the D can make some changes. This is a bye week. PUT IN WORK

I think Strong needs to make it a "all hands on deck" approach to fixing the defense. Strong is great at finding and recruiting talent.....not so much at hiring coaches. How many top programs would hire Bedford? There is your answer. If he left Texas tomorrow would ANY top 30 team hire him as a DC? I don't think so.

I see the argument about controlling the clock and we should have sustained longer drives, but it seemed like we tried that in the third quarter some and we sputtered. I can't help but think if we wouldn't have played the rotating QB game and went up tempo like the first half we would have scored. This offense works on tempo and when you take that away it seemed easier to defend. Yes, we still should have been able to run no matter what, but penalties will take care of that.

Were we being routed at that point? I didn't watch the game, so I'm more asking than making any direct statement. But I thought that put us within one touchdown at that moment in the game.

But it is beyond me why ANYONE would think dropping a ball two nanoseconds after crossing a goal line is acceptable. How much does a regulation college football weigh? Is it so burdensome that you have to get rid of it as quickly as humanly possible? You can't carry it two feet farther, your muscles are just so fatigued that it literally just drops from lack of strength to hold it anymore? You know what cures that? Two rounds of stadium steps, and 100 one hundred-yard wind sprints.

Yes we are all very disappointed... and I couldn't agree more with some of your posts.

BUT

If we would've said 3 weeks ago that we'd be 2-1 heading into the bye week and ranked in the Top 25 nationally, I guarantee everyone one of us would've taken that!

Remember this is young team, and I'm not saying that to make excuses but I'm saying that because prepare for some more disappointments this season.

Before I call for someones heads I'd like to see the growth of this team at the end of year. They still have A LOT of growing up to do!

And through 3 games we have yet to blown out in a game! Silver lining? lmao...

1single high safety, burned...rinse and repeat.

Chuck better take the reins before he finds himself in too deep a hole to dig out.

I mean, yeah, nobody expected us to be undefeated this year but we're seeing some recurring bonehead coaching. If Charlie/Bedford can get the defensive alignments/calls fixed before conference play, then this loss can be used productively. I'm seeing some things over and over though and they're not being fixed. Seeing people running free in our secondary over and over ain't gonna cut it.

Our D and kickoff teams trying to tackle might as well be orange cones half the time.

This young team needs to learn how to put teams away. Vs Notre Dame and Cal we were up by a few scores and driving with our foot on their throat.....and we threw INTs in our endzone and let the other team back in the game.

I wouldn't be making excuses or blaming refs or saying we executed. We get leads and then fail to put teams away. So far in both games we played decent teams. Need to learn killer instinct.

As much as I want to agree with you. Texas is a better team than Cal, we lost that game for two reasons.

1. We can't stop the pass.
2. We got too cute on offense.

As Clob said, run run run and then run some more. They couldn't stop us, there was no reason go away from the run.

We have way too much talent in our defensive backfield to not be shutting down every opponent. Or at lease slowing them down. Unless there is anyone here that thinks San Diego state has better DBs than we do?

6 yards a carry. Take SB and his 6 carries for -1 yard and we average 6.8 ypc. That nebraska circa 1994 numbers.
